May pinag-uusapan silang tatlo pagdating ko. I didn't bother announcing my presence since they look so immersed in their conversation.
Now that I know what they thought of me as their princess, it seems useless to strengthen my bond with the servants. Ang hirap ipilit. May ugali na silang naiisip sa akin kahit na hindi pa man nila ako nakikilala ng husto at 'yon ang mahirap baguhin.
You cannot change someone's impression just by showing a little kindness. Because remembering kindness is a remote trait of a person. They will forget it eventually.
And when a simple mistake occurs, big or small, it would be the only thing they would remember when they see you.
"You're too quiet."
"Ha?"
Natigil sila sa pag-uusap at sabay-sabay na lumingon sa akin. Mabilis akong ngumiti sa kanila para ipakita na ayos lang ako.
"Ang sarap lang ng pagkain," tugon ko at sinamahan ng tawa para magmukhang makatotohanan.
"Should we call it a night?" tanong ni Legend. Nanlaki ang mga mata ko at mabilis na umiling.
"We are all having fun! Why would you stop this great evening?" I smiled. "Don't worry. Kapag pagod na ako, magsasabi ako."
"Okay." Tumango si Legend.
"Pinag-uusapan lang namin 'yung pagbabago ng Wraigrecan mula noon hanggang ngayon, Eloise," sabi ni Aileen.
"Malaki ba 'yung kaibahan noon sa ngayon?" kuryosong tanong ko.
They all nodded in unison.
"From the policies to the customs, yes," sagot ni Legend. "Before, the title could only be passed down if the reigning one is already dead. But now, once a crowned prince marries, he could already be crowned as the emperor depends on the decision of the monarchy. The wife of the crowned prince could wish for a withdrawal of marriage anytime, too. Dati, bawal. A crowned princess who gained her title from marrying a crowned prince should carry out her duty for her entire life even if she begged to be freed from the marriage."
Napaawang ang labi ko sa mga tinuran ni Legend. Sinulyapan ko si Aileen sa gilid ko na tumatango-tango. The new policies of the empire seems to be in my favor.
"May dumi ba ako sa mukha?" tanong ni Aileen. Nabigla ako. Mukhang kanina pa ako nakatingin sa kanya. Umiling ako.
"Wala naman. Sorry. I was just thinking of something."
The party went on for another hour or two. I was smiling and laughing along with their jokes, disregarding everything I'd heard earlier.
Everyone was still having a great time when I yawned. Wala akong makausap gaano kasi sila Aileen, nakihalubilo na sa mga kasama niya. Silang dalawa ni Noelle ang nandoon. Si Legend naman ay tinawagan ng mama niya.
"Sleepy?"
Nilingon ko si Legend na nakasquat paupo sa harap ko. I smiled then nodded. "Is it okay kung mauna na akong matulog?"
"Yeah. If you're tired, then rest."
Tumayo na ako ngunit nagtaka ako kung bakit hindi pa rin siya umaalis sa pwesto niya.
"Bakit?" tanong ko sa kanya na nakatingin sa akin.
"I'll come with you," aniya pero inilingan ko na siya.
"Ako na lang, Legend. I think they still want to have fun with you," pagtanggi ko at kinuha ang cellphone ko.
Legend looked at them before glancing at me again, "I think they're fine on their own."
