"HAVE I GOT MY TEETH?!"

This is another one of my favorite Elvis Presley stories about the real Elvis. I don't know which year this took place, but here goes:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elvis, Sonny, and Alan had just gotten inside, after a night of Christmas fireworks. Now, Vernon had a habit of- around Christmas time, there'd be bowls of cashews, peanuts, whatever -grabbing a handful of nuts, throwing them in his mouth, and chewing them up. Vernon walks into the room and there on the counter is a little glass bowl of these little, red and white things. Vernon just assumes it's candy, grabs a handful, chews them up- BOOM! Smoke bellowed out of his mouth! You know what he chewed up? It was these things:

(If any of you don't know what those are, you throw them down on the ground and it makes a little explosion. Like, the tiniest explosion possible. They're actually really fun.)

"OH, MY TEETH!" he cried, as he put his hands up to his mouth. "HAVE I GOT MY TEETH?!"

Elvis laughed so hard, the chair he was sitting in fell backwards. Elvis knew he wasn't hurt.

"IT AIN'T FUNNY, IT AIN'T FUNNY!" Vernon scolded his son, who was on the floor, with tears of laughter in his eyes.

I'm sure it must've numbed Mr. Presley up a little bit! That had to have stung!

"Y'all didn't have to do that!" said Vernon. "People must've done what I just did."

"Daddy, you're the first one!" chuckled Elvis.

"Well, you watch!" says Vernon, smugly. "I'm sure someone else'll do it."

No one else did it, but Vernon wasn't giving up that easily. Just then, Elvis' cousin, Billy Smith comes in.

"Billy! You gonna have some of that candy, Boy?" asked Vernon.

"Yes, Sir! Where is it!"

"Right there, in that bowl!" said Vernon, as he pointed to what he'd just chewed up a few moments before.

Billy walked over and looked at what was inside of said bowl.

"No, Sir! Uncle Vernon? Those are those pop things that you throw down!"

Once again, Elvis starts laughing.

"Daddy, I told you," he smiled.

"Well," said Vernon. "Somebody else might do it, but I won't be here when they do."

No one else did what Vernon did. Vernon was the only one to chew up those poppers. The moral of the story is always be aware of your surroundings.
