tyler's point of view
"i can't believe you facetimed us from josh's apartment," emily says, shaking her head as she flips through hangers.
"why? i'm there all the time," i say, knocking my foot against hers.
"yeah, but he was there! on the call with us!" sydney adds from a few feet away, looking through dresses on the other end of the rack.
"and you were so blushing," emily teases, nudging me with her elbow and sticking her tongue out at me.
"shush." i narrow my eyes at her but a smile breaks my act two seconds later.
sydney picks up a dress and holds it up for us to see. she tilts her head to the side in question. "is this too slutty?"
"just slutty enough." i hold out a thumbs up and she smiles.
"perfect. you know me so well."
"i haven't found any i like," emily adds, stepping away from the rack to come lean her head against my shoulder.
"that's okay, em. i'm sure we'll find you something."
"you should let me pick! i'll find something out of your comfort zone and i bet you'll love it!" sydney says, the dress she picked still in her arms.
"that's a very scary idea."
"you should do it. maybe she'll find something awesome," i encourage the idea and she sighs dramatically.
"fiiine. go try on yours first, syd."
she complies, closing the door behind her while emily and i take a seat on the bench outside the dressing room.
"so, how's your essay coming?"
"i've got my whole outline done and most of an introduction drafted. what about you?"
"about the same. i'm not too far into my introduction, but i got most of it down."
"how are you and james?"
emily pauses and looks down at her shoes. "well, i've been trying not to bring it up because i didn't want to kill the mood. i know i'm leaving this summer and i already feel bad about that."
"em, we would never really be mad at you for going to your dream school. we're so proud of you. what's going on?"
"ready for the big reveal?" sydney's question interrupts our conversation.
"i'll tell you later," she says, clearing her throat after.
sydney steps out of the room in the dress, which is everything she usually looks for in dresses: a low cut neckline, spaghetti straps, and a form-fitted silhouette. the fact that it's red and sparkly is a bonus. emily and i clap for her and she giggles.
"you look incredible as always, syd," i tell her.
"very nice, very nice," emily says. "very sydney."
"yeah? you guys like it? i feel like i'm definitely killing it." she turns to look at herself in the mirror at a different angle.
"very slay of you, as the kids say," i add.
"oh god. never say that again." emily shakes her head.
"thank you. i agree. i'm gonna change back into my clothes. then, miss emily, i am finding you something you will look even more beautiful in. you two stay here." sydney flashes us another smile and steps back into the dressing room to change.
she tells us when she's done to hold her dress while she goes to look for something for emily. as soon as she's out of earshot, i resume the previous conversation.
