tyler's point of view
"so, he knows we know?" sydney asks, swirling her straw around in her coffee.
"yeah. he didn't really mind though. he just said you guys seem nice and that he was worried you wouldn't like him."
"that's so sweet." emily smiles from next to me at the table.
"he seemed kinda... nervous, almost. like he was nervous to hang out with you guys outside of school at some point, which i get. it might be kinda awkward at first, but you guys will like hayley too. then we can all hang out together."
"that's so exciting!" sydney kicks gently at my leg under the table. "i bet it'll be fun."
"won't it be weird when we're all just like... in college, hanging out and... not here?" emily asks, a strange expression on her face as she thinks about it.
"we're about to be adults, guys..." sydney adds, eyebrows raised.
"minus you, tyler. you were already an honorary adult."
"designated dad friend!"
"always."

school goes by slowly, so when i do eventually get to lunch, it's a relief.
"it feels different now. he's standing right over there, looking at us and, like... knowing that we know."
"that barely made sense." emily laughs at sydney's attempt.
"oh, shut up. you know what i mean. anyway, prom is coming up! the three amigas, back in action! booze edition." sydney claps once, her smile wide.
"did you both get permission to stay over?"
"yes, sir!"
"obviously."
"cool, cool. are you guys wearing the same dresses you wore to the last dance?"
sydney scoffs. "tyler, are you insane? of course not. that's basically illegal."
"so, does that mean i'll be dragged to another shopping day?"
"obviously."
"fantastic," i reply with fake annoyance, a small smile betraying my front.
"you love us."
"i do."
"you know who else you love?"
"what?"
"the man walking over here right now."
my eyes widen and i turn to follow sydney's line of vision where josh is walking in our direction.
"hey, mr. dun." emily offers a small wave and a polite smile.
he stops at our table. "oh, hey, emily. sydney. tyler. how're you guys doing?"
i feel my face flush a light red and clear my throat before speaking. "we're good."
"we are great, mr. dun. we were just talking about prom," sydney answers better than i do.
"ah, i see. you excited? i hear you three have some interesting plans."
"interesting, but safe!" emily interjects.
"i'd hope so." he laughs a little and emily flashes an awkward thumbs up.
"what was your prom like?" sydney asks him.
he looks to me briefly and then back to her. "oh, you don't wanna hear that story."
