"How close are we?" I muttered to Soap quietly, as we used the sides of destroyed buildings to cover us in the night.

"Should be close enough for comms soon." He answered and I felt his eyes on me, he knew I was anxious.

I wasn't just anxious because I was going to see Simon, or Price. Everything about this put my nerves on edge. I'd been out doing whatever for an entire year. It wouldn't have seemed like much to anyone else but that was quite the break for people in our line of work.

So far things had been easy, quiet. We made our way through what was once a small town, but now it was nothing but fallen over bricks and ash.

We hadn't run into anyone, not the enemy, or the rebels and that made me even more anxious. I hated the quiet sometimes, it was easier to focus when there was gunfire around me.

"Keep trying them. On me." I said as I began to move, my rifle ready in my hands as my goggles turned the night green.

Soap and I pushed forward, never moving in a straight line. We rounded corners and cut across streets, whichever way provided the best cover. I stopped once we'd gone a few blocks. How big was this damn town, and how far away was the rest of my team? And why weren't we running into anyone?

I didn't like this at all. Soap had informed me on the way here that he'd lost contact with them after Price told him where to find me. If the enemy wasn't here, how could they be stuck?

Had we come out here for no reason?

"Captain, Lieutenant, come in, this is Soap." He tried again and we waited for a response.

"Soap, this is Price, how copy?" Price finally came through and I felt relief rush through me.

"What's your location? We're on the way to you." Soap responded and there was a pause.

"Cadaver?" Price asked after a moment.

"Copy." I answered, not in a position to have a reunion at the moment as I pushed us forward. I had to focus, but I was also waiting for Ghost to say something.

"It's good to hear your voice, kid." Price started and I could hear the smile in his voice. "Listen, we've moved. What's your location, we'll come get you."

"About three klicks from where you last were, and closing." Soap answered.

"Get out of the city." Ghost ordered then and I felt my heart stop at the sound of his voice. Soap was waiting for me to answer but I couldn't, so he did.

"Why?" We stopped, crouching low to the ground at the warning.

"We can't be sure if they'll send another barrage. Head east, we'll find you." Price this time.

I looked back at Soap and gave him a nod before motioning for us to start our way out of town. There was nothing but desert to the east, but I trusted Price, and the night would give us cover.

"Copy." I answered as we moved out, the sand slowing my steps. I'd been here before, but I was doing my best not to think about it. Knowing what I did now had made it harder to come back to this place, but I had to, for my team and for myself.

a few hours later

I felt like we'd been walking forever. The sky was clear and I caught myself looking up to gaze at the stars every one and a while. There was no one out here so my nerves eased a bit. Still, I was anxious to see Simon. Had he not said anything because everyone else was listening? Had he known Price asked Soap to come after me?
