It had taken me a little longer to get to Myrtle Beach than I would've liked, I had stopped to try catch some fish for almost a whole day, but I was here now anyway, and that was the important thing.

I jumped down onto the sandy beach, looking back at the boat, satisfied with how far I had come. I was about to start exploring, I knew from the map that there was an airport nearby, that could be useful. I was rudely interrupted by the sounds of someone screaming. I thought it was a crank at first, until I heard him,

"Help! Someone help me!" I grabbed my gun, carefully making my way towards the voice. I rounded a corner to see a boy hiding in a tree, a pack surrounding said tree. I couldn't see his face, he had his legs tucked up towards his head, burying his face in it.

I sighed, walking towards them. There were only 5 cranks, so one by one, I stabbed them in the head, taking them down carefully. The boy didn't seem to notice and I stood at the bottom of the tree, looking up at him pathetically as I placed my hands on my hips.

"You gonna stay up there all day?" I called out to him. He looked down at me, furrowing his brows as he stared at me. I could see him better now, he looked about my age, maybe a little older. He had scruffy brown hair and piercing brown eyes. His face had a long scratch on, blood slowly trickling from it.

I heard him sniffle before climbing down, landing harshly on the ground,
"The airport, is it overrun?" I asked him and he brushed the dirt from his trousers, not properly standing up. He was taller than me, only by about five inches or so.

The boy nodded,
"I lost my mum there" he said sadly. I raised my eyebrows slightly before turning on my heels, walking back towards the boat, there wasn't any point in staying somewhere overrun, that's how you die,
"Right.." I mumbled as I walked off, leaving him stood there for a second.

"Hey wait!" I heard him calling, running after me, making me sigh, "I'm Jay.. thanks for help me" I looked back over at him before stopping, placing my bag on the floor and taking out a piece of cloth, holding it up to him,
"For your face" I said, picking up my bag, continuing towards the boat,
"Where are you going?" He asked, having to jog to catch up. I didn't really want to tell him, it's not like I needed help. I ignored him, walking down the walkway towards the boat,
"Is this your boat?" He continued to ask as I climbed on. He followed me, standing on the deck of the boat.

I was going to kick him off but I paused, he was harmless, so I decided to let him stay for now, turning on the engine whilst pulling up the anchor,
"How did you kill those things?"
"Oh my god!" I groaned, shaking my head at the boy, "You ask a lot of questions" I stated at him for a second, he didn't look very dangerous, I sighed, "Where are you heading?" I asked, making him chuckle,
"Don't really have a destination, Atlanta? I suppose" He sounded like he was more asking me than telling me,
"To answer your questions, where I'm going is my business for now. No this isn't my boat, I stole it and I killed them by going for the head, whatever this disease is stems from the brain."

I could see Jay staring at me from the corner of my eye as I drove, it was starting to get on my nerves,
"What's your name?" I glared at him briefly before focusing my eyes back on the sea, without any new fuel from Myrtle, I could only hope I had enough to get to Charlestown.

---

I had shown Jay the bed and he was asleep now, leaving me to myself. I was tired.. I think that might be an understatement  actually, I hadn't slept for ages and it was catching up with me now, although my tolerance has improved, it isn't great.

It was 4am when Jay woke back up. I looked over tiredly at him as he stood up on the deck,
"You look tired, you should sleep" He suggested, looking up at the night sky. I had to admit it was beautiful, the stairs and planets shone brighter than other, especially out here where there was no light pollution apart from a couple lanterns on the boat,
"I can't, I need to drive" I said, not looking anyway but the ocean ahead of us,
"I can drive" He suggested, approaching me, standing next to me, "Just tell me where we're heading" I paused for a second, considering my options.

I stepped to the side, revealing the map and compass besides me, revealing the route,
"Head for Charlestown, it's our next stop" I told him. I watched Jay for a second as he smiled at me, turning around to put both hands on the wheel, straightening us up slightly.

---

I stared at half a sandwich which sat on the side, a small note next to it: "sorry, it's a little stale- J" I sighed, grabbing it from the side, eating it quickly before having a small drink, climbing straight into the neatly made bed, falling asleep almost instantly, exhaustion taking over my body.
