As the day went on, my headache grew worse the more my mom knitpicked at everything I did.

Violet, your grades need to be better. Violet, you need to join fencing. Violet, why does your hair look like that?

The only thing that kept me going was the promise that she would be leaving at the end of the day back to the manor or wherever else she was reeking havoc on. She never liked to sleep in hotels.

With my feet aching from all of the walking in heels I continue to trail behind her though the hallways as she smiles venomously to fellow alumni as she passes.

"Have you been initiated into the nightshades yet darling?" She asks, her voice low as is this club is a dangerous secret.

"No, not yet..." my jaw clenched as she purses her lips in disproval, turning away from me as one siren in particular catches her attention.

"Gabrielle! Is that really you?" My mom practically beams evilly as I notice Bianca trailing behind her mom miserably and we both give each other a look of mutual panic as our moms get their mean girl claws out.

"Josephina Good, what a nice surprise this is." Bianca's mom grins back with an equally murderous look in her eyes, and I feel like it's time for me to escape before I get caught in the crossfire.

"Indeed it is, how have you been darling it feels like ages since I last saw you."

"I've been wonderful, I just came to visit my daughter for the day. I'm sure your own daughter knows my Bianca, she's the fencing captain here and I'm so proud of her."

Bianca looks up at her mom in confusion as she grabs her arm bringing her to her side and I can feel my own mom's magic roiling in envy as she silently motions for me to join her side as well.

"Ah yes, very impressive. This is my own, Violet. She just won the Poe cup I believe, isn't that right flower?" She pets my hair in a fake motherly gesture and I try to hide my cringe as I give the two girls a fake smile and a nod.

"Violet and I know each other very well. In fact, I needed to talk to her for a moment about her interest in the fencing club. A spot just opened up and I'm sure she's dying to talk about it..." Bianca speaks up suddenly, looking towards me with an expectant look and I quickly follow her lead, willing to do anything to get out of this situation.

"Oh, right! Of course, I wanted to talk to Bianca about their techniques. Can I please go?" I look up at my mom with a sweet pleading smile, and she narrows her eyes slightly in suspicion but then eventually recedes dismissing me with a nod.

Bianca links her arm in mine like we're friends and we both quickly scurry away, taking deep breathes as we get farther and farther away from that showdown.

"Thank you for saving me from that monstrosity. I was afraid they would start talking about "good old" Nevermore memories and who knows how long that would take before they're ripping each others throats out." I shiver at the thought and Bianca hums in agreement, letting go of my arm as we slump against the wall with a sigh of relief.

"No problem, I know how bad our parents can be and that was not something I wanted to witness on my Saturday afternoon." Bianca tells me and I chuckle softly in agreement, feeling weird that we're on the same side for once.

"Parents suck." I admit plainly with a small smile and she chuckles back at me.

"Parents suck." She repeats in pained agreement and we both sit on the ground in the hallway talking for an hour waiting for our moms to calm down.

When the bell rings throughout the courtyard indicating parents farewell, we head our separate ways and I find myself outside of the front entrance coming over to my mom next to her expensive car.

Her arms are crossed as she waits for me to arrive, and as I approach she opens the to me for a rare hug.

I take it, feeling slightly awkward hugging her as we rarely do any loving gestures.

She smooths down the hair on the top of my head and as we pull away I look up at her beautiful face.

"Be careful Violet, this school can be a refuge but it can also be a war zone. Be on guard at all times." She admits with a serious tone and I raise my eyebrows in confusion at the cryptic message.

"What does that mean?" I ask softly and she shakes her head, not wanting to explain further.

"I'll be careful, I promise." I admit softly as she enters her car, rolling down the window to look at me.

"Love you flower." She tells me in farewell as I step away from the car, and I give her a pained smile as she drives away.

Lucy comes up to me as her car gets farther and farther away, sending my stress and anxiety.

I look down at him with a sigh of relief and confusion, in desperate need of a nap or something.

But instead my feet find themselves walking towards a shack in the woods instead of the dorms and my knuckles wrap on the old wood as I wait for Xavier to open the door...
