I can't help but give Xavier a once over as he lets me inside the shed

I can't help but give Xavier a once over as he lets me inside the shed.

He's ditched his school uniform for a a tee shirt and hoodie, both stained carelessly with different colors of paint. Half of his hair is up in a bun, with a few stray hairs sticking out around his hairline and it looks unfairly hot.

"You okay?" He asks as he gives me a soft concerned look and I nod silently in return, going over to his work bench and jumping on top of it to sit down.

Kicking the heels that I've come to loathe onto the ground, my legs dangle over the side of the table tiredly as I sigh in relief.

Today was rough, I completely forget just how irritating my mom can be. It's easy to block her out when I'm alone here at Nevermore, but once she's near me I revert completely back into my shell.

I hate how powerless I feel around her.

"Tough parents day huh?" Xavier notices my tired expression with a hint of knowing and I snort at his words.

"You have no idea.  I seriously contemplated eating the siren food at lunch just so I could get sick enough to avoid spending the rest of the day with my mom." I tell him with a serious look and he laughs at the thought, while I try to hold back my own laughter at the ridiculousness of it.

"Yeah that sounds about right.  She does look pretty... intense." He cringes and I wince at the memory of her giving him that withering stare earlier this morning.

"Yeah, sorry about her earlier. Don't take it personal, she just kinda hates everyone." I reassure him, chuckling at the end as I lean my head back against the wall of the shed.

"Clearly, I thought she was going to hex me with that death stare of hers. I don't even want to image what your dad could be like."

"Join the club. My dad is practically Voldemort because my mom refuses to even speak his name.  He kinda ran out on us when I was in diapers so I don't blame her though..."

"Im sorry, that's shitty. But at least your mom came today, all I got was a text from my dad this morning telling me that he was too busy planning his next tour to come." He tells me, his voice irritated at the end and my face falls into a frown that his dad doesn't seem to care.

It hurts my heart just a little seeing him like that, and it hurts even more to know that our home lives are similarly fucked.

"Ouch, I'm sorry. I guess we both have daddy issues..." I try to joke to lighten the mood but it comes out weak in the end, but Xavier snorts slightly anyways as he shakes his head.

"I guess so... wanna forget about it for a while?" I watch as he gets up and pulls a rolled joint out of his pocket.

"Hell yeah." I tell him without hesitation, eyeing up the stick with curious apprehension. I've never smoked weed before, but I feel like I can trust Xavier so I follow his lead.
