Wednesday had completely forgotten to practice for her cello competition that was now only a few days away. She was sure she had her piece down, but she couldn't just have it down. She had to have it perfected, there was no room for errors. She quickly sat down behind her cello, dragging it into her chest. She was about to start when Enid rushed in, completely breaking her train of thought.
"Oh! Can I listen?"
Wednesday glared at the girl, not sure if she was serious.
She wasn't big on playing in front of people, because she tended to let herself be lost in the piece, and once she began, she wasn't sure when she would stop. But considering she would have to perform in front of an audience and three judges, she figured this might help with preparations.
"If you insist."
Enid sat on her bed quickly, letting Wednesday take a moment to refocus herself before she began playing, the melancholy chords striking the air. Enid watched as Wednesday let the music flow through her, seeing with her own eyes as she and the cello became one. Wednesday played with passion, with intent. The song startled Enid, but in a good way. She felt every emotion that was piercing the air, the despair, the anxiety, the unspoken fears that the music seemed to speak of. She was in awe that such an instrument existed, that it could exude so much of what humans felt. Wednesday quickly moved the bow back and forth, her fingers shifting quickly as she continued onward, the song gradually gaining speed. It felt like what anxiety would sound like if it were to have a sound.
When the last note rang out, neither of them made a sound. Wednesday looked up, seeing Enid with tears pouring out of her eyes.
"The emotions were so strong."
Wednesday almost rolled her eyes but found herself pleased that her playing had this effect on someone. While Enid very much displayed every emotion that ever existed, she was touched by the fact that her music was enough for her to feel it.
"Thank you."
Enid quickly wiped her tears, standing up and fanning herself.
"I'm gonna get some air, do you wanna come?"
Wednesday set her bow in its case, considering her invite.
"Sure."
They both got their coats on and headed down to the courtyard. They walked in silence, enjoying the cool winter air, and the calmness that seemed to come with it.
"How are you and Xavier?" Enid said, breaking the silence.
Wednesday looked over, trying to speak but not finding an answer.
She didn't quite know what they were. They were friends, but they were also more. Or so she thought. She hoped that he felt the same way she did, part of her was sure he did, but the other wasn't. She couldn't believe someone could feel that way for her, she almost wished she knew for sure. She felt herself get disgusted for a second, the thought of her wanting to be loved making her cringe at herself slightly. But then a warmness rushed through her, the way he grinned at her, respected her, and hugged her all came to mind. If that was love, she would take it any day. Her view had been tainted by her parent's constant touching and affection, but it wasn't like that with Xavier. She enjoyed the small touches, the occasional long hugs, and the goofy grins they gave each other.
"Wednesday?"
She forgot about Enid for a second, shaking her head slightly before responding.
"We are good. Moving along."
