Chuuya sighs, trying not to make it too obvious that he’s dragging his feet against the pavement, his last bit of resistance. His sister, Kouyou, keeps her gaze steadily pinned ahead at the signage for ‘Yokohama Hospital’ printed in bright lights against the indigo of the creeping nighttime. She’s a solid presence beside him nevertheless, both a source of comfort that and familiarity, and also a reminder that he can’t keep putting this off.

It’s been ten years since he’s presented as an Omega, the skin above the scent glands on his neck turning to fire-engine red. It’s been ten years of dreading the embarrassing ordeal of succumbing to one’s instincts, of that feeling of wanting to bare his neck for a deserving Alpha to bite into.

…At first, his parents were ecstatic to discover that he’s presented as an Omega early. After all, evolution has dictated that most Omegas present when they’re around eighteen-years old, ensuring that their bodies are not too underdeveloped to support a possible pregnancy that could theoretically occur as soon as they have their first heat. Alphas gain a bluish tint on the skin above their scent glands as early as fourteen, allowing them to make full use of their puberty years growing into solider physical frames that could act as a provider for their future mate.

Passage of time has curtailed the ‘purist’ views of only having Alpha-Omega pairs as socially acceptable. Nowadays, people are free to mate with whoever they wished. Like the parents that have adopted Chuuya, for example—Paul and Arthur are both Alphas who met each other during their work as soldiers. Unfortunately for Chuuya, their retirement means that they can now start fussing over him and his lack of heats.

In Chuuya’s mind, it’s actually a relief that he’s not having those heats. It made for a smoother time at school, because he did not have to drop off for a few days that would have caused him to arrange for supplemental lessons. At work, it means that he can be that guy they can reliably expect to always be present—he’s proud of his four-year perfect attendance record streak.

…But his Alpha parents are worried. Kouyou-anesan and Kyouka-chan, his two sisters that were also adopted, both turned out to be Alphas. As the sole Omega in the family, they don’t have anyone who can give them advice as to how to handle this strange lack of heats.

…Ah. He’s digressing.

“We’re here,” Kouyou-anesan tells him, firmly dragging his elbow forward so he can present his identification to the receptionist. “I have to go, but let me know if you’d prefer me to pick you up later.”

Chuuya shakes his head. His sister has just transferred to be an Executive here, she’s bound to be busy. With a dry smile he assures her, “I can take a taxi home, don’t worry, Ane-san.”

Kouyou only leaves after making him promise to actually see and listen to the doctor, instead of punching them in the face when they try to examine his insides. Chuuya makes the promise but crosses his fingers behind him; if the doctor is anything like that one he saw in Russia… Chuuya’s not about to let someone like a rat who looks at him like he’s a particularly tasty cut of cheese about to poke and prod at him.

He’ll have to behave a bit though. Arthur has some contacts with this hospital’s higher-ups, apparently having been on good terms with this hospital’s current director during one of his jobs before. It’s something like fate, Chuuya’s been told, that they’re moving to permanently settle in Yokohama then.

Chuuya tries to let his mind wander to light, non-stressful things as he fills in his information. The receptionist is looking at him and Kouyou in unabashed curiosity; Chuuya’s been made aware to the fact that this doctor that he’s about to see is an absolute genius and powerhouse in the field of Omegas’ reproductive health and that the wait list is maintained at half a year long.
