I STAND by Anson's sickbed impatiently, shifting from foot to foot and waiting for Aiden to arrive.
I was working with Ava at a café when I just felt something wrong in the system. My heart flopped around in my chest like something had just happened, but I ignored my inner soul's calling for help and continued coding – a few minutes later I got the call that Anson, Aiden's girlfriend, had been shot by a Byrok criminal and was now at the hospital awaiting further treatment.
The caller's voice blared through my phone speakers. "Mr Hale, are you Miss Ambers' cousin? What is your relationship?"
I was shocked. "She's my friend's girlfriend and a friend of mine too, why?"
"The bullet hadn't punctured her brain, but we need your consent to perform surgery to remove it."
I nodded frantically. "She's not my cousin, Doctor. But do whatever you can to save her. Please."
I came from the café I was working in with Ava right after getting the call from the hospital; immediately hailing a taxi and rushing straight to visit my best friend's girlfriend.
***
We had just been making progress with hacking Byrok's system by tracking James' IP address – I guess this is when my degree in computer science and my twin's in business are paying off.
Today was my first day meeting Ava face to face in more than a few months, but I had already realized how much she changed in this amount of time.
My twin sister had smiled and pulled me into a hug, telling me that she had recently started dating another of our old classmates Jason. To say the least, I was shocked that my annoying twin sister had managed to find a boyfriend – but some part of me was jealous. After spending time with her new friends, Ava had rarely initiated conversation with me anymore and hadn't even told me that she was dating someone. It was weird for her not to tell me – also weird that she hadn't thought to.
Growing up, I had been her protective older brother – even though we're twins. I was born at almost midnight on June 4th, and she was born a few minutes later on the next day – so people often refer to me as older than her. I'd always protect her from bullies; defend her; and even risked my life just to protect her from anything that lied ahead.
Any boy that was interested in Ava Hale had to go through Tristan's test first. That was common knowledge at school. Countless boys had tried to court her and break her heart – and I was with her all the way; through the fifteen-year-old breakups, people confessing but treating her like she was nothing. I was there to defend my sister in countless fights, to tell those boys to kindly go away.
