One day, I decided to take a detour from our normal path.
"What are you doing?" my partner asked.
"We never go this way," I said. "Shouldn't we check it out?"
"Not if we didn't get a call," he said.
"There's no harm in changing things up a bit. Just this once."
"Do you know something I don't? You're usually the type to go by the book."
I kept my eye out for anything suspicious. I heard some members of the mafia were going to rob one of the houses in this rich neighborhood at this time. I just didn't know which one.
"Crypto?" my partner said.
I saw some movement at one of the houses' front doors and I stopped the car. "Look!" I pointed at the house. "Did you see that?"
My partner looked over. "See what?"
I parked the police car by a curb a little distance away from the house and quietly got out of the car as I grabbed my gun.
"What did you see?" my partner whispered.
"Something suspicious," I said.
My partner turned the police car lights on.
"No! Turn them off!" I whispered. "They'll see us!"
"We have to identify ourselves."
"Fine. Just be ready when they try to flee."
"I'm gonna go wake up the owner."
"That's not a good idea."
"Why not?"
"What if the robber has a gun?"
"Well we can't just break in without probable cause. We don't even know if there is a robber."
"Fine, but be careful."
My partner went up to the door and rang the doorbell.
I watched for the robbers. The mafia never sends out a member alone.
After waiting a bit, my partner rang the doorbell again and knocked on the door.
I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. A masked figure was trying to sneak around the house, toward an empty vehicle.
"Stop! Police!" I shouted as I ran after him with my gun pointed.
Gunshots went off from inside the house.
"Police! I'm coming in!" my partner warned as he busted the door open.
The masked figure got to the car so I shot at the tires before he could even get in.
The intruder tried to hide behind his car.
"Come out where I can see you with your paws up!" I ordered.
He tried to make a run for it across the street. I wasn't allowed to shoot unless someone's life was on the line so I chased after him.
When I finally caught up, I pinned him to the ground and handcuffed him. He had a knife on him but luckily didn't try to use it on me.
I brought him to the police car and locked him inside so I could get to my partner.
Inside the house, I found my partner on the floor. He had been shot.
"He went out the back door," he told me. "Go get him!"
I sprinted out onto the deck and down the stairs. I tried to be quick but careful. I knew the guy was armed and not afraid to shoot.
I stopped at the bottom of the steps and smelled the air as I listened carefully with my ears.
I heard the sound of gravel shifting under someone's weight as they ran and I followed the direction of the sound.
As soon as I saw the runner, I shot at him. I knew I shouldn't have, but he had just shot my partner and I didn't want to risk losing him. He was a danger to society.
The criminal fell to the ground with a shout and I got closer. He reached for his gun, but I shot him again and he went limp. I kicked the gun away from him and checked his pulse. Once I was sure he was dead, I went back inside.
"I got him," I told my partner.
I noticed the owner of the house standing on his carpeted stairs so I put my gun in it's holster.
"Is he dead!" the owner asked.
I nodded.
"Good."
"What about the other guy?" my partner asked.
"He's detained. Did you call the paramedics?"
"Yeah, but I think I'll be alright. Too bad he missed my bulletproof vest."
"Yeah, but it's good he missed your head."
"I hope the other guy gets what he deserves," the owner said.
"Oh, he will," I said.
