There were so many guns going off that I didn't notice that someone else had opened fire until I saw some of the cops in front of me get shot directly in the head. The rest of them ducked behind their cars and I got shot in the back. I turned to see who had shot me as I went down, but there was no one in sight. It was either a sniper hidden somewhere or it was Diesel, most likely Diesel.
I started shooting blindly, hoping at least one of the bullets would hit him. The other cops followed suit until we realized that we were wasting ammo and the shooter had stopped.
Something the size of a tennis ball flew out from behind the police car I had arrived in and landed in the crowd of officers.
"It's a grenade!" one of them shouted.
It exploded, killing a couple officers and injuring a couple more, but now I knew where Diesel was hiding.
I stood up and stepped beside the vehicle as I shot at the other side. His bullet shells were laying on the ground just beside the tire. He couldn't have gone far. He still had a broken foot.
The police officers opened fire again and I used the car as a shield. It was the only cover from the bullets within ten yards. I couldn't imagine where else Diesel would be safe, but if he had been there, my bullets would've hit him. I underestimated how small he was.
A bullet hit my gun and the gun flew out of my paw. Diesel appeared and climbed out from under the car.
"Whose side are you on?" he asked as he pointed a gun at me.
"Yours," I told him.
"Then stop trying to shoot me and start exploding some things."
"I'd have to take the bulletproof vest off."
"Then take it off. If you don't start helping, I'll just kill you."
"Fine." I took the vest off and used my power to destroy his gun. I tackled him down.
Diesel took a grenade from his belt and removed the pin.
"Are you insane?!" I shouted.
He smiled and released the trigger. "Yes."
I jumped back and he threw the grenade up in the air. It exploded as he went for the gun that had slipped out of my paw. I used my power on it before he could get to it.
Diesel sighed. "Well, I tried to kill you humanely," he said, as if he was trying to do me a favor.
I was no longer shielded by the car and one of the cops' bullets hit me in the thigh. I yelped and Diesel was immediately on top of me, digging his teeth into my neck. Since I didn't have the vest to protect me from his shark tooth power, he was able to do a lot more damage in the few seconds he had me in his jaws.
The cops shot at him and I shoved his lifeless body off of me. The paramedics were already on their way. I wasn't the only cop who was badly injured.
The detectives met me at the hospital to get the full story of what had happened while it was still fresh in my mind. I told them as many details as I could remember, and they assured me they would keep me safe from then on.
My old partner, Dedrick, visited me in the hospital room.
"I wasn't sure what you'd like so I just got you a get-well-soon card," he told me as he handed me a letter.
"Thanks, Dedrick," I said.
"This is all over the news you know," he said. "That serial killer was an infamous guy. Did you take my advice? Are you going to get into a protection program?"
"Yes. I already have it arranged with the detectives," I said. "Thanks for always being in my corner."
"No problem. I'm just glad you're still alive. When I heard the news that you were attacked by that psychopath, I prayed to God that you would be okay. Did you have to get stitches for your neck?"
"Yeah. Eighteen of them."
"Wow."
"And I got a bullet to the thigh. Oddly enough, that's what bothers me the most."
"Really?"
"I would just like to know who was the idiot who shot me. I know it was one of the cops."
"Probably a rookie," Dedrick said.
"Probably. It makes it very difficult to get comfortable."
"Well, I hope you heal quickly."
"Thanks. I think the worst is behind me."
After Dedrick left, I looked at the card he gave me. It had a sweet get-well-soon message and it was signed by his whole family. His kids' paw prints were on the card in paint with their names signed in the middle of the paw pad.
Written at the bottom of the card was a Bible verse: Jeremiah 29:11-13, 'For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.'
I stopped there and didn't read the last verse. I had prayed to God before and he didn't listen.
I threw the letter in the garbage.
