Rockie was waiting for me in his yellow sports car which was parked in front of the house, but Uncle Blade's car was gone. I backed my car into the driveway in case I needed a quick getaway. I didn't even lock the car when I got out. I was sure something was up. Either Rockie had seen or heard about me hanging out with Birdie or someone had told him I got information out of Hal and he was here to kill me.
"Where were you? I thought you just got off work," Rockie said as he walked up to me.
"I did," I said.
"Then where's your cop car and uniform?"
"My partner took the patrol car and I left my uniform at the station."
"And your gun?"
Why is he asking about my gun? I thought. Is he making sure I'm unarmed before he attempts to hurt or kill me?
"What do you need?" I asked, ignoring his question.
"Let's talk inside," he said.
Now I was sure he was planning to kill me. He wasn't going to do it out in public where the neighbors could see.
"Where's my uncle?" I asked him.
"I don't know. All I know is there was no one here to let me inside when I got here."
"I was thinking we could talk out here. The weather isn't too bad."
"It's dark and cold."
"Yeah, but it's nice."
"I think it would be safer to talk somewhere private. That's why I didn't want to talk over the phone."
"Well, I lost my keys so we'd need to wait for my uncle to get back."
"You are literally holding your keys in your paw."
"These are my car keys."
"You have multiple car keys?"
"I have multiple cars."
"You said your partner had the other car."
"Yeah. I have an extra key for it."
"What's the third key for?"
"Mail key."
Rockie sighed. "Alright. Hop in my car. I know somewhere we can go."
"How about I follow you in my own car?"
"Why would you want to do that? I mean, just look at my ride! It's not every day you get to ride in a Porshe 911 Turbo S."
"As tempting as that sounds, I have some errands to run so I should take my own car."
"Suit yourself." He got in his car and started up his engine which made a noise loud enough to wake up the neighbors if they had been sleeping. It was only 9:30 at night so I wasn't too worried about it, but I knew Rockie was just showing off his engine.
I got in my car and followed him which wasn't hard since his shiny yellow car stuck out like a sore thumb in the dark. He obviously got that color for attention, but I wondered if he had ever thought about how easy it would be for the police to spot him if he were to break a law.
Rockie parked by a restaurant and I parked next to his car and we entered the restaurant. I was a little surprised he took me to a popular restaurant when he wanted to go to a private place.
"Welcome-" the lady at the front greeted us, but Rockie cut her off.
"We're not here to eat," he said as he passed her and took a left.
I followed him around to the back of the restaurant, through the kitchen, and to a door that was being guarded.
"Sup, Rockie!" the guard said. "Who's your friend?"
"This is Crypto," Rockie told him.
"This his first time?" the guard asked.
"Yeah. We won't be long," Rockie said.
"Word of advice," the guard said to me, "don't look anyone directly in the eye." He opened the door for us.
"He's joking," Rockie told me as we entered the room.
The room looked a lot like the rest of the restaurant with tables of different sizes. There was a group of animals I assumed were in the mafia who were sitting at one of the large tables discussing something that sounded business-like. One of the guys was standing behind his chair, leaning forward on the backrest. When he saw us enter, he slowly stood up taller. He was a big guy and I didn't like his judgmental look.
Rockie led me to a table with two chairs. "Sit."
