"Get down!" I shouted as the police station exploded. The blast blew both me and the chief a few feet back.
I landed on my side and then instinctively looked at the building which only caused another explosion.
"Burn, baby! Burn!" Duke cheered inside my head.
I shut my eyes. "Duke, stop. There are animals in there with families."
"Not anymore," he said. "Take a look."
I slowly opened my eyes to see the destruction but was forced to use my power yet again on the last bit of the building that was unharmed.
"Tricked ya!" Duke laughed.
I knew I didn't have any more energy for my power after that.
"Federici! Did you cause that?" the chief asked me.
"Uh," I said. I noticed he was holding handcuffs. "Technically, no, but also yes."
"You're under arrest," he told me as he came at me with the handcuffs. I put my paw up for him, knowing the handcuffs were powerproof.
Duke forced me to reach for my belt, which I wasn't wearing.
"Where's your gun?" Duke asked me.
"I don't have a gun," I said.
"I can see that," the chief said as he put a handcuff on my wrist.
Duke was forced out of my body and I put the other handcuff on his wrist before he could get away.
"What the-" the chief said. "Where did he come from?"
"Inside me," I told him. "He was using his power to control me."
Gavin appeared, saw us in handcuffs, and immediately teleported away.
"Who was that?" the chief asked.
While he was distracted, Duke stole his gun and shot him dead. He then pressed the gun against my head. "I should kill you right now," he growled.
"You would need permission from the Boss," I told him.
"Unfortunately, you're right," he said. He tossed the gun far from reach and took the handcuff key off the chief's body. "Bet you thought you were so clever!" He took the handcuff off himself and put it on my other wrist.
"Now what?" I asked. "Gavin can't teleport me with this on."
"I don't think Gavin is coming back, and neither of us have our phone to call him so we'll have to steal a car."
"Do you know how to hotwire one?"
"Of course I do. Who do you think I am?"
He took me to one of the police cars and started working on it as the firetrucks showed up. I hoped there weren't too many animals in the building. It was the middle of the night so there was a chance only a few had died. Most of the working cops should've been on patrol.
After about fifteen minutes of trying to hotwire the car and electrocuting himself a few times, Duke finally gave up.
"**** these cop cars!" he shouted in frustration.
"Shall we walk then?" I asked. "Or do you want to stay here until the cops come?"
"We'll just steal a car that's already on," he said.
"Okay, but can you take these handcuffs off me first? I won't be of much use with them on."
"No. How stupid do you think I am?"
"I'm injured. What could I do? I can't even run."
"You could steal my gun," he said.
"Couldn't you just use your power on me?"
"It's draining to do that and I don't know how long this will take."
We walked beside the street for a couple miles. I couldn't believe Duke was bold enough to openly carry a gun with all the cars going by, and near a police department too. Unfortunately, no one seemed to notice us. It must have been too dark and the cops were probably distracted by the fact that the station was on fire.
"I don't think I can go any further," I told Duke. "I'm in a lot of pain and it's very difficult to walk in handcuffs. Where are we going anyway?"
"We're looking for a parked car with someone inside."
"Good luck with that. At this hour, the only cars with the driver inside would be the cars that stopped working."
"Well, I'm not gonna just sit here and wait for morning."
"I will." I sat down. "My body can't take any more walking."
"I think it could. You just need some help." He unlocked my handcuffs and threw them into a ditch.
I snatched Duke's gun from him and shoved him into the ditch as I shot him a few times. I had to make sure he was dead. I even went into the ditch and checked his pulse. He was definitely dead.
I left the gun beside him and tried to hitch a ride with one of the cars. I saw many police cars go by with their lights on. None of them paid me any attention, even though I was clearly injured and lost.
Eventually, a car stopped for me. The window rolled down and Jordan popped his head out.
