"Would you at least take that duct tape off her?" I asked as the driver drove us to Las Vegas.
One of the mobsters ripped the duct tape off Birdie's mouth.
"Ow!" she said. "That pulled out some of my whiskers!"
"Birdie, I'm sorry I brought you into this," I said.
"No, I'm sorry. They made me get your location."
"It's not your fault. I'd rather be hurt than have anything bad happen to you. You don't deserve any of this."
"Enough of this gushy stuff," one of the guys said as he put the duct tape back on Birdie's mouth.
She glared at him.
"You'll let her go if I go on this mission?" I asked.
"Yes," Victor said. "You have my word."
"Then I'll go."
"Good," he said. "Not that you really have a choice."
The van stopped outside of an old building and Victor's guys forced me out of the vehicle.
"Paws off," I said. "I can walk on my own. And you can let Birdie go now."
"Not until you're gone," Victor said as he shut the van door with him and Birdie inside.
I was taken inside of the rundown building.
"Why is he tied up?" Spiney asked the gang. "This is no way to treat Family."
"He was trying to fight," one of the guys said.
"Well, what did you expect when you kidnapped him?" the Boss said. "Untie him."
They removed the ropes.
"Thanks," I said. "So what is this mission Victor spoke of?"
"It's a very important long term mission on a secluded island. Many will be going there to help out, but I want to make sure only those who are well suited for the job will go. That is why you will be taking a test just like everyone else."
"What kind of test?"
"Similar to the tests you took at school, but easier. Gavin will take you to the testing room."
The owl flew to me and teleported me to a room with a bunch of computers. There were a couple of animals already taking the test.
"Have a seat at any of the computers," Gavin told me. "I'll be back when you finish." He teleported away.
I sat at one of the desks and started the test. It had strange questions such as: 'On a scale of 1 to 5, how much do you like kids?' and 'Do you enjoy inflicting pain onto others?' and 'Are you a team player?' and even 'Do you have any morals or lines you won't cross? If so, what are they?'
I wasn't completely honest on the test. I wanted to pass so that Birdie would be safe. This mission was the only option I was given to save her. What I didn't realize was just how long term the mission would be or the horrible things I would have to do.
