We got to the airport in time and I spat the knife out once the cop was out of sight.
"That was very uncomfortable to hold in my mouth," I said. "You guys should've discussed it with me before you bribed that cop."
"You don't have much to complain about," Rockie said. "We made it here on time instead of going to jail."
"The only reason jail was an option was because you were being stupid," Uncle Blade told him.
"True, but we probably would've been late if we stayed in that traffic," Rockie said. "Maybe it was my plan all along to have a cop pull us over."
"I'm the one who paid him to drive us here," Uncle Blade said. "And if it weren't for Crypto, we would be jail."
"And I'm very grateful," Rockie said, "for both of you. Maybe your bad luck is over now, Crypto."
"I hope so," I said.
We ate some lunch just before boarding the plane. Unfortunately, I got food poisoning and had to spend most of the flight in the lavatory. That day was the second worst day I had ever had, right behind the day my parents died. I began to wonder if all my bad luck was just a coincidence or if God was punishing me. He seemed to enjoy making me suffer.
We finally landed and got off the plane.
"Surprise!" Birdie said when she saw us come through the airport terminal. She ran straight to Rockie and gave him a big hug as she kissed him on the mouth.
I was green with envy. I wanted more than anything to have her greet me like that, especially after all I had been through. I deserved it.
"I missed you," Birdie told Rockie.
"I missed you too," he said.
I had to look down to avoid glaring at them.
"I missed you too, Crypto," Birdie said.
I looked up at her and fell so hard for her all over again. Her dazzling eyes and tenderhearted smile were to die for. I couldn't help but smile back at her.
"He didn't have a great flight," Rockie told her.
"Really? What happened?" she asked me.
"Food poisoning," I said.
"Oh no! That's no fun!"
"Not at all," I agreed.
"He didn't have very good luck the whole trip actually," Rockie said.
"I know. I heard about his injury," she said.
"That's not all that happened," Uncle Blade said.
"What else happened?"
"We can discuss it on our ride back, yeah?" Rockie said.
"Sure. Do you guys have a ride?" Birdie asked me and Uncle Blade.
"Yeah," Uncle Blade said.
"Our cars are waiting for us in the parking garage," I told her.
"Aw, I kinda wanted to hear about the trip from the three of you," she said.
"We could stay here awhile to talk," I suggested.
"No. You don't have to do that," Rockie told me. "I'm sure you're still not feeling well and I bet Blade is tired. It's 1 am Paris time."
"Yeah. I was gonna go straight to bed," Uncle Blade said.
"I don't mind staying," I said. "I'm feeling quite a bit better now."
"It's fine," Birdie said. "I have dinner waiting in the crockpot so we should get home to eat."
"I could come over," I said, eagerly. "If that's alright with you two."
"No offense, Crypto, but I think I've spent enough time with you these past few days," Rockie said. "I would like some quality time with my girlfriend now."
"Oh... Okay."
"Maybe we could talk later?" Birdie suggested.
"Yeah. We'll talk later," I said.
The two love birds left, leaving me disappointed.
"I still expect you to stick to your word," Uncle Blade told me.
"Huh?" I asked.
"You said you would move out as soon as you were paid."
"Yeah. I will. I didn't forget." I wondered how much money I would have left after spending so much on the antiques I broke. Hopefully, it would be enough to afford an apartment.
