"Crypto? What happened to you?" Jordan asked.
"Long story," I said. "Can you give me a ride to the hospital?"
"Sure," he said.
He unlocked the car doors and I climbed in behind him.
"Did you get the memo?" he asked me.
"What memo?" I asked.
"The whole Family has been ordered to kill anyone wearing a police outfit. We're in an all-out war."
"That's crazy," I said.
"So what were you doing out on the side of the road?"
"My car broke down."
"What are the injuries from?"
"You haven't seen the news?"
"No. I don't watch that stuff. Too depressing."
I was surprised he would think it was too depressing. After all, he killed and watched animals be killed all the time by choice.
"It doesn't really matter," I told him. "It was just a misunderstanding."
"I can't believe the Boss is having us kill all the cops," Jordan said. "There are too many of them. It's a suicide mission if you ask me."
"I agree," I said.
"I'm not ready to die tonight."
"Neither am I. That's why I'm going to the hospital where it's safe. You can join me if you want. You don't have to go through with this plan. Your kids need a dad."
"I know, but I can't just ignore orders. The Family needs me too. If we don't have everyone helping, we won't win," he said. "I suppose you're an exception since you're injured."
A couple police cars sped past us, chasing another car. I knew what Jordan was thinking.
"Can you please drop me off at the hospital before you put your life on the line?" I asked.
He sighed. "Okay."
"Thanks."
When we arrived at the hospital parking lot, I asked Jordan, "Do you know if Birdie is alright?"
"Birdie? I think so. Why do you ask?"
"I heard the cops found her house."
"They did a few days ago. She and Rockie got away safely though. They're staying at Cam's place."
"Well, I'm glad they're safe."
"Probably not now. At least Rockie and Cam probably aren't safe with everything going on. Birdie will probably be okay."
"Well, thanks for the ride, Jordan," I said as I got out of the car. "Be careful out there. If you ask me, your real family is more important than this Family."
"I think that's blasphemy," Jordan half joked.
"Maybe, but you do have to make a choice between the two," I told him. I shut the car door and walked to the hospital building. I hoped he would make the right decision, but if he chose the mafia over his wife and kids, I wasn't gonna feel that bad for him. I would feel kinda bad for his family though.
I went to my hospital room and none of the nurses stopped me. They were all too busy tending to all the injured cops coming in.
I grabbed my phone, and called a cab to pick me up. It took a while to find one. The drivers were probably scared to be driving around with all the shootings going on.
The cab I finally got a hold of, took me to my apartment. I went inside, grabbed my gun and put it in a bag, and then quickly headed back out. The cab took me to my final destination which was Cam's house. Luckily, I knew where he lived from the times I drove the guys home after they drank at the bars.
I tried to call Birdie on my way there, but she still wasn't answering my calls which had me very worried.
