Kakashi knelt down as a cloud of smoke disappeared, revealing a tiny brown pug. "Pakkun."
"What's up?"
He swallowed the lump in his throat, his chest aching as he has been on the edge since this mission began. He was alone, and who knows if reinforcements will back him up or not. The black slug was sucking the life out of him and growing in size, burdening the shinobi. He had this glassy look as anger and guilt weaved in his gut. "Please help me find Rin."
"You got it, boy. Don't worry, we'll find her."
"Hope so." He murmured.
You can't even keep your promise to a dead boy. How embarrassing.
He watched Pakkun drag his nose through the ground, circling several times as he waves his tail. Rin had been kidnapped and already he was feeling the full wrath of guilt. This was entertainment for the black slug as it watched Kakashi struggle to keep himself together.
This is going to go well.
You're failing harder than usual.
Its weight burdened the boy's shoulders and it was becoming exhausting to maintain control. He quietly tailed Pakkun as his mind wandered to the worst-case scenario, it was even difficult to control his breathing.
"Follow me, boy!"
He was hot behind the dog's heels. They ran through the forest at full speed in hopes of finding the girl alive. It won't matter if there is an ambush, all they thought about was to get to her. I won't fail you, Obito. I will protect Rin. Please have faith in me. I'm not a failure. I'm not a scum. His legs were beginning to burn, but he had to get to her. As he zipped through the trees, he was already thinking about how he would fight off her kidnappers, how he would save her, and how he would keep his promise to Obito. He had already failed as a captain, he can't fail again.
"Her scent is getting closer!" Pakkun cried as a cave emerged from the horizon. He led Kakashi towards the cave, keeping his hearing in check just in case of an ambush. He had grown fond of the boy as they both have similar personalities. There was this instant bond as soon as Abi helped Kakashi sign the contract. He had also heard of the boy from his mother. His mother belonged to Kakashi's mother. He could feel her presence as her scent grew stronger. They arrived at a dark cave, instantly feeling a change in the air from the humidity. The pitter-patter of his tiny paws and audible sniffs echoed through the dark place.
Kakashi halted, his feet drifting in the dirt. He quickly untied Rin and caught her as she fell. "Release!"
She blinked a few times, "Kakashi?"
"Rin!" A wave of relief washed ashore, but there was no time to relax. They had to get out of there ASAP. He helped her up, clutching onto her like there was no tomorrow. "Are you okay to run?"
"I feel weird. They put something in me."
"It doesn't matter. We have to get out of here before they come."
"Kakashi, I feel weird." She repeated herself,
"Come on!" He grabbed her arm and dragged her with him. He had been holding his breath this whole time, and he was wasting his energy trying to keep focus. He jumped up to the first tree he sees and started hopping from one branch to another.
"Kakashi, listen to me!" Rin yelled, catching up to him. "They did something to me."
"We'll figure it out as soon as we get back to the village." He insisted,
"No! It's too risky! You have to kill me!"
He stopped to do a double take at Rin, his eye wide in bewilderment. He will not feed the black slug's ego. He was persistent in saving Rin.
