I look like death... Kakashi sighed at his devastating reflection in the bathroom mirror. He hasn't gotten any proper sleep, he couldn't. Then he also had to bear through his duties as if everything was normal. He had just done the bell test a few weeks ago with his new team, and the result was better than expected. He embraced the signs that he failed to do with Minato. The moment he heard Sasuke say 'here', and then proceeded to share his bento with Naruto, which then led Sakura to follow suit... That was the sign... That made him feel like his old family pushed him to be with these kids... It made him believe in them, and he will do anything in his power to help them. They were only assigned D-rank local missions for the time being because of Akira's safety. Kakashi couldn't leave the village. The kids seemed to be bored out of their minds and growing impatient. How is he going to explain to them that this will last until Anbu assassinates Rizo? He always had an overwhelming amount on his plate, and it's now coming back to bite him.

She's going to die, Little Kakashi...

You're failing to protect her...

The black slug had been frequently reminding him. It had an opening, and it was determined to use it as an advantage to take back what was once in its control. Kakashi was well aware of what would happen if he were to plunge back into the endless void he spent so much time trying to get out of.

It will happen again...

You can't escape your destiny...

You will kill them...

Akira will be taken soon...

You won't be able to save her...

He closed his eyes, only to find the gory images of his past at the back of his eyelids. It was growing difficult to be his nonchalant self. It was also getting exhausting to be on his toes all the time. The day Tenzo showed up at the Hokage's office to bear the bad news was the day he will forever remember. This Rizo... He's good... He really did his research... If Kakashi could find a way to outsmart him...

"Darling, why are you awake?" Her sweet voice poured into his ear. Akira stood behind him with her head cocked to the side in confusion. "Something the matter?"

He wiped his sweaty palms on his boxers and turned to face her with a fake smile, "I had to pee."

"You haven't been sleeping well?" It sounded more like a statement than a question. She knew her husband too well. "You look like you haven't gotten any sleep. I'm getting worried."

"It happens sometimes, right?" He shrugged dismissively,

She took his hand and brought him back to bed, "I'll wait with you until you fall asleep."

"You don't have to." He crawled on top of her and laid his head on her chest. Her heartbeat made him feel at peace – the heartbeat that saved his life. The thumps that pushed him to live. "Don't worry about me."

Akira ran her fingers through his voluminous hair, tenderly scratching his scalp. She brushed her slender fingers through the features on his face to relax him, "Tell me, otto, is something bothering you?"

"I have so much on my plate." He confessed, sinking deeper into her comforting embrace. That was all he could say to her. He really wanted to tell her, but he knows what she might do. Last he heard from Tenzo, Rizo had escaped from the Land of Wind. He knew he was being searched for.

"You do. I understand that it's difficult shouldering everything."

"Yeah." A long sigh escaped his mouth as he tightened his arms around her,
