Warning: Suicide attempt
"Would you like to see him?"
"I'm not ready."
"I understand." Lord Hiruzen chewed on the tip of his pipe, "You are free to see him as you wish. I'll give you the address of his assigned apartment once he's old enough. He's safe in the hospital right now."
"What happened?"
"There has always been a risk. Minato has told you that, has he not?"
He didn't like the answer, and he didn't really want to accept it. Something must've happened because Minato had already briefed him about the plan. He was sure it was supposed to go well given the precautions they had thought of. "What's going to happen to the baby?"
"We must keep him safe. That's all that matters now. And for everyone's safety, he must not know of his past."
"Can't wait for you to meet your little brother! You take good care of him now! Don't let Master Jiraya teach him about girls. Make sure he eats his veggies. And you protect him. You're his big brother. Okay? Promise me, Kakashi-niisan!"
"Okay, I promise."
"And thank you for staying by my side."
"Always, Kushina."
"Kushina's pregnant. I'm telling you because you're part of the family. If that's what you're worried about. You will always be part of the family, Kakashi-boy. Kushina's a jinchuriki. Her seal will weaken throughout the pregnancy and during birth. So I want you to guard her in case anything happens. Can I trust you with her? So it poses some risks."
"Of course, sensei."
"I'm glad I can trust you. Please do your best."
"Yes, sir!"
"Go home, Kakashi. Get some rest. I still need you to resume your duties soon." He pats the boy on the shoulder and left him to stand alone in front of the photos of everyone who had fallen during last night's incident.
Every time he sees the faces of the people he loves, he felt like his heart was being squeezed. He barely made it to Ari, and he was too late for Kushina and Minato. There were so many things to say to them, that he should've said ages ago. He had only focused on those three that he only realised, as the crowd returned to their homes, that Abi and Hatchi were part of the fallen heroes. His hands balled into fists, his knees grew weak. Everyone was wiped out. His inner child couldn't stop crying, calling for everyone not to leave him. He was in hell.
There's no one left, little Kakashi...
You got rid of them all...
Even if you promised that you wouldn't let another comrade die...
You failed everyone...
It felt like he was stabbed in the heart. The black slug's slime had infused his bloodstream, spreading darkness to every inch of his body. His temperature dropped and his heart felt weak. The black slug feasted on the little life he had left in him.
"Kakashi... I didn't find her... I'm sorry..."
He closed his eye and sighed. His cracked heart chipped off, as he just lost the last part of himself. There were no strings to keep him together, no walls to protect him; he had nothing left. He was hollow inside. He too had been searching for her, but she was nowhere to be found.
