The cool spring night invited the insects to sing to the stars and the fireflies to dance in the sky. It was nice weather tonight but Akira felt like the air was thin, making it uncomfortable when she breathed. The hospital felt suffocating as she waited for the medics to operate on Kakashi. The bright fluorescent lights were becoming an eye sore and the silence of the hallways made her feel lonely. Her skin itched as she was getting uncomfortable. Being alone in the waiting room made her think about the things she had been avoiding. She had the room to herself so she started to think about her parent's death, and then that night when she found Kakashi. Her thoughts started speeding up and bumping into each other, making her head spin. What if she was late? She was late in saving him this time. She failed to protect him. Luckily, the poison was just to paralyse the body. Her life flashed before her eyes when he fell head first on the ground. She was late in finding her father. Maybe she could've saved Abi if she came back earlier. She could've been late to save Kakashi. He would've bled out or died from an infection in his wounds. He would've bled out on the living room floor, and she would be the one who found him like how he found Sakumo. Her stomach began to act up, and she couldn't hold it any longer. She ran out of the hospital and made it just in time to the front to throw up in the bushes. Her anxiety was through the roof and she felt like she was being pinned down by this heavyweight. She hasn't eaten anything yet since she came back, so her vomit was just pure bile. Never had she felt this damaged before. She was terrified of losing him. She was already aware of how it felt like to have a life without him when he lost his way. It made her life seem pointless. No one could ever love her like him. As she hyperventilated next to the bushes, her world falling apart, tears just started streaming down. She was gasping for air through her mouth like someone was suffocating her. She was cornered by her own intrusive thoughts.
"Akira! Akira!" Someone grabbed her shoulders, "What's happening?"
Well, hello there... Little Akira...
"Akira!"
It's an honour to meet you... I've heard a lot about your happy little life...
It's a shame that I'll have to come in and change it for you...
"Akira! It's me! Snap out of it!" The voice grew higher, "Please, Akira! Please!"
Her knees buckled and she just grabbed onto the person.
"Okay, okay..." His voice softened, "It's okay. I got you, sis. Don't worry, he'll be fine. I know you're scared. I got you."
"I-I-I-I don't know." She stuttered between sobs,
Iruka smiled and squeezed her arms, "I understand. He'll be fine."
She wiped her mouth and rubbed her eyes, following Iruka's directions to control her breathing. Her anxiety took her by surprise, like a sudden explosion. And then it felt like she was stuck in the middle of the ocean during a sea storm.
"Besides, do you think he'll let me take care of you myself? I don't think so." He chuckled, "Even if Tenzo's here, the both of us still wouldn't be enough for him."
"Yeah, he doesn't really trust you guys with me." She nodded,
"That's right. You don't know how many times he's threatened me, even when you two weren't talking. Don't tell him I told you that, though. I still want to live."
She gave him a small smile, "Thank you, Iruka."
"I know you can't get that out of your mind. He probably feels guilty about it, but you have every right to feel every ounce of fear and anxiety about that night. And what happened on the last mission was just him putting you and Tenzo first. Doesn't matter if you're capable or not. He knows that."
