Until she was five years old, Emmie played almost exclusively with her brother. Einar and she were born alpha wolves and their parents told them daily that they would grow big and strong. To achieve this, they taught them to fight and hunt at an early age.
Emmie's early childhood was marked by friendly fights with her parents and brother.
The two young wolves occasionally played with the neighbor's children, three young werewolves without rank, but mostly they kept to themselves.
Emmie's brother Einar was a stormy, strong, and somewhat snooty boy. Emmie, on the other hand, was confident and determined. She knew what she wanted and also how to get it. Mostly by tricking her brother when he had something she wanted. But when it came to fighting, her brother usually won.
Their parents raised their two children to be strong leaders. Einar especially liked this idea. He wanted to lead the pack. With a strong hand, as their parents always said. Of course, he did not know what 'with a strong hand' meant. He assumed that he could uproot trees one day. Emmie had a rough idea of what it could really mean, but at the age of five, she didn't quite understand it too.
However, her life as a 'hermit' was to change that day. Her parents had invited another family for coffee. Malte, Beta Lifa's brother, and his wife Otilie. They would come with their two children, Adahlia and Mads.
Alva, her mother, looked sternly at Emmie and Einar. "You two will behave well and play with the two children. Mads is your age and Adahlia is six. She's a young beta. I want you to be especially nice to her."
"Why?" Einar pouted offended. "Why should we be particularly nice? And play with them? We can play well alone..."
"Because Adahlia will be Beta one day. Like Beta Lifa. And one of you two will be Alpha. You must get along with her. And with Mads. A shy boy, but that can still change." Their mother petted their short blond hair. "I want you both to be nice and friendly."
Emmie nodded and looked at her brother, who snorted offendedly.
When the family came for coffee, Emmie quickly realized she didn't like Adahlia. She pinched and pushed their brother and her parents had difficulties stopping her. Mads and Ottilie struggled to get their strong beta daughter under control. The somewhat stocky Adahlia had a round face and long uncombed curls. She wore a pretty dress, which was a bit too tight for her. Einar quickly got along with the girl and the two hurried to his room to play with his wooden figures. Mads, on the other hand, tried to hide behind his mother. His hair was combed, and he wore a crown of daisies on his head. A few pale spots of paint adorned his clothes. He watched Emmie skeptically.
"Do you want to play?", she finally asked, while their parents were talking about boring things.
The boy looked at his mother, who nodded at him encouragingly and pushed him in Emmie's direction. Mads was slightly shorter and thinner than her, and he looked at her with wide eyes. He seemed nice.
"Do you like to play with wooden figures?", she asked him.
Mads shook his head.
"And catch?"
He shook his head again.
"What do you like to do?"
"Crafting", he replied quietly.
Emmie smiled happily. "Dad bought me new pens yesterday! Come! We can draw together!"
This piqued the boy's interest and he followed her into her small and somewhat messy room. Several wooden figures lay on the floor. She quickly pushed them aside. Then she fetched paper and the beautiful new pens.
"Do you want to be friends from now on?" She handed him a piece of paper. "I usually only have my brother... Einar does not draw. He says that's something for weaklings. Such nonsense. Friends?"
Mads smiled shyly. "Gladly."
