Cleo
Flordelis looked at Cleo curiously, while Cleo walked along the edge of the makeshift tent camp, making sure everything was okay. A light protective spell shimmered in the air, which made attackers believe that they only saw a meadow and no tents. The two dragons were on the lookout for danger, while centaurs and harpies were engaged in friendly fights so that they learned to fight together.
Cleo sighed and looked at the centaur girl. "Can I help you?"
Pleased, Flordelis trotted up to her and looked at her expectantly. "You use manipulative magic, yes? Juli told me that this means that you can use spells!"
Cleo nodded. "Only seers cannot use any spells other than the binding spell. Healers, however, have different spells than manipulating witches and wizards."
"And how do they work?"
Cleo smiled. "You're interested in magic?"
Flordelis nodded eagerly. "Juli can't use spells, so she couldn't tell me how they work. I will one day be able to manipulate the will of others. But that will take some time. I'm too young. This is also magic. But not the same."
"Well, you have to write the spells", Cleo told her. "There are different symbols and patterns to write spells, which we witches and wizards can read instinctively. However, we have to learn how to write the spells."
"Writing? On paper?" Flordelis asked, accompanying Cleo in her inspection of the ward.
"To practice, yes. First, we write the spells on paper. Then, however, they are ineffective. The spells must be written in the mind. At the academy you learn this from the second year, so Julia can't do this. She never finished the first year of school. I'm going to teach her some spells. But first, for her, I'm concentrating on everything that's useful for a fight.""It's exciting. Why are spells on paper ineffective?"
"That's a very good question." Cleo smiled delightedly. Flordelis would probably be a very good student at the academy. "Imagine all the mischief that could happen when the spells come into effect when students write them down on paper! There are very dangerous spells. Spells that can melt an opponent's brain. Or worse! And if a spell is misspelled, it can lead to explosions. Therefore, they must be ineffective on paper. It is said that this was achieved thousands of years ago with a strong spell. Even the attempt to break it is a serious offense. The records of this spell are believed to be lost."
"Lost... Wait! Does that mean that there are magic books?" Flordelis almost jumped with excitement. "With all the spells?"
"Of course. No witch and no magician can remember all spells! To learn a spell, witches, and wizards must write the spell on paper until they know it by heart. There are a few basic spells that are taught at the Academy. Each additional spell is learned in self-study. Or at the universities. And a few you only learn at the military school."
"It must be exhausting." Flordelis seemed to be on the lookout for something. "It's funny", she murmured. "I can't see anything. No ward. As if it wasn't there."
Cleo laughed softly. "You're not a witch."
"How many spells do you know by heart?"
"Not much. Just a few very useful ones. Writing new spells and exploring all their possibilities is a prestigious profession that requires a long period of study. That's not for me. I'm too impatient!" Cleo winked at Flordelis. "Charlotte spent a semester learning how to write spells until she switched to becoming a doctor for the military. She, therefore, knows more about spells than I do. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out to her. But be warned! When it comes to spells, Charlotte quickly goes into endless raptures."
