~“<Sofia, How many times do I have to tell you not to look out the window at night?!>” The elderly woman whispered and pulled away the little girl.
“<But Grandma, I left my doll outside and it’s raining!>”
“<We will retrieve it once the sun rises. Now come along, supper is ready.>"
The little girl was devastated her favorite doll was getting drenched in the rain. After dinner, Sofia got ready for bed and waited for her grandmother to tuck her in. She was still curious as to why wasn't allowed to look out the window whenever nighttime fell. The windows in her room were covered by curtains. She tried to take a little peep through the curtains until she heard footsteps approach.
"<All right darling, I've ironed your school clothes for tomorrow and here's a glass of water.>"
Her grandma set the cup down on the nightstand and went over to tuck Sofia in.
"<Grandma…why can't I look outside at night? It doesn't seem like there's anything scary out there.>"
She paused her movement and looked at her confused granddaughter before clasping her hands together.
">Would you like to hear a story?>"
The little girl nodded her head.
"<Well, there was this young little girl with pigtails who loved to dance; her one goal was to become the most amazing ballerina in the world. There was a ballet contest coming up and practice. However, she noticed that all the other contestants were more proficient than her. Her ego was bruised and she didn't think would be able to win the contest.>"
"<What happened next? Did she give up?>"
"<Well… She cried and cried the night before the contest, but before she went to bed, she prayed on a star that she would win. During the dead night, the little girl's shadow came to life on its own and snuck out into the night. One the day of the contest, the little girl was nervous but still performed her dance. She noticed her routine was different from what she practiced and it was like she had no control of her body…>"
Sofia held tight to her pillow, a bit scared of the story her grandma was telling her but continued to listen to her.
"<When the other contestants went to perform, they kept tumbling and messing up their dances; some of them didn't even show up. After each performance, the judges declared the pig-tailed girl as the winner, she was so happy to hold her trophy unknowing that she had a mischievous guardian angel watching her.>"
"<So, the little girl's shadow stole the other dancer's abilities?>" Sofia asked.
"<Yes, it stole their skills and they could never dance again. Which is why I don't want you to look out the window at night because something or someone can take something away from you. Do you understand now?>"
Sofia looked at the curtain-closed window, concerned about what could be lurking outside.
"<Ok grandmother, I will stay away from the window.>"
The elderly lady kissed Sofia's cheek before blowing out the candle and walking out of her room and wishing her a good night.
Sofia was too conflicted to fall asleep, too many questions ran through her head and the thunderstorm was much help either. She tossed and turned the whole time until thunder crashed down causing her to jolt out of bed.
The clock read 2:04 am, no doubt that grandmother was asleep. Sofia did think about making a quick run to get her doll outside but after the story, she was told, she stayed put in her bedroom.
