I wake up to the sound of a bell....
Ugh.
"WAKE UP YOU MAGGOTS! YOU HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO TODAY!!!" Becky yells from downstairs, her high pitched shriek ringing in my poor ears.
Via rolls out of bed and falls on the floor, rubbing her eyes.
"Not another day." She groans with a tired frown.
I know.
"Is anyone else up?" she asks in a sleepy voice, getting up from the floor and dusting her blue nightdress off.
"I am." Pearl answers getting out of bed, she seems ready for the day, a very big contrast to me and her sister.
I roll out of bed and muster up all the strength I can to clean up my side of the room.
"Good morning." I say to the girls while I pick up some dirty clothes, they smile back.
"Good morning, Eris!" They say in unison, "Nice rest?"
I shrug and put my clothes away, not having much to say as I didn't have any dreams I could tell them about since I don't dream.
Becky barges into our room with a big ugly scowl on her wrinkled face. Her light brown hair is always in a short stringy and greasy mess. Clothes damp and smelly as they haven't been left to dry.
"I thought I told you to wake up. This is your last warning!" She bellows like the mad woman she is.
Um, we are awake.
"We'll be right there Be...Ma'am." Via responds, quickly covering up her small slip up.
Becky doesn't say anything more, instead she marches out of the room slamming the wooden door behind her.
Via, Pearl and I go to wake up the other kids, As the oldest ones here it's our duty.
I enter the small bathroom that's across the hall and check the taps.
"No Water!" I yell to the others loud enough for them to hear.
No one responds. I walk out of the bathroom and throw some clean-ish clothes on then plait my hair into two twin braids. When we're all ready, we go downstairs for breakfast.
Becky glares as we all walk into the room, "Eat your breakfast." she says like we don't know that's what we're supposed to do in the first place.
I'm about to sit down for my meal when she stops me, holding her hand up with a small smirk plastered on her face.
"Not you." she glares, "Your breakfast comes after manual labor."
I sigh and wait outside until the others are ready.
"Ready?" Via asks coming out of the house, Pearl behind her. I nod.
We all start to walk to the farm, Pearl and Via leading the way.
"I hate this." Rose, an eight-year-old complains as she trudges along with our small group.
"Everyone does." I remind her, kicking a tiny pebble along the dusty path.
My stomach growls and Pearl notices.
"You're hungry." She remarks, slightly alarmed "We need to get you something to eat. You know how 'she' can get."
'She' is one of my many problems and if I don't keep her happy bad things happen.
"Let's go to the market. Maybe Mr. Donald can give us some bread from his bakery." Via suggests.
