'Of course, she's working for Zeus directly now.'
I stepped back when the figure turned around, ignoring how my heart skipped a beat at the blue eyes that locked with mine. "Sorana..."
"Not gonna call me what you used to call me, Firebug?"
"Stop calling me that," I hissed and watched her walk closer, my eyes widening at the sight of her in a maid outfit.
"So, does seeing me in one live up to that dream you had?"
'What is she doing?' I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head, trying to focus on anything other than her. 'Is she trying to use her charm speak on me? Why can't she let me go?! She broke up with me!'
"Well?" I stumbled back at the sudden close proximity, yelping quietly when my back collided with the wall. "Gonna answer me, mommy?"
"B-back up... You had years to be a good girlfriend, you chose to use me to try to free my grandfather from Tartarus. Now, let's go, I promised Hunter I'd meet her-."
"Ugh, not her again."
"You two always hated each other — I know why now."
I shouldered my way passed her and continued down the hall I came from, wrapping my arms around myself. 'Can't deny that she did look hot in that,' A frown appeared on my face at the thought. 'Whatever, the ladies are a lot hotter anyway. I just... have to keep my past away from them. Yeah, if they ask, my father's a lesser god. The only issue will be Sorana,' I stole a glance at her when she began walking next to me. 'She's not going to play along, so I'll have to convince the ladies that she's a chronological liar. Shouldn't be too hard — it's true.'
"Where's fox boy?"
"...No men allowed — at least, I'm assuming. Not a man in sight."
"Ah, heaven on Earth," Sorana hummed before gently elbowing me. "Seriously, where is my former captain?"
I clenched my jaw and stared at the floor as we walked. "He uhm... He's gone."
"What?!"
"Don't stop," I growled when she stopped due to shock, grabbing her arm and pulling her along. "In case you couldn't tell, my uncle is pissed."
"...Basil's dead? H-how?! I-I told everyone to let you two escape!"
"It wasn't the army," I muttered, letting go of her arm once I saw Hunter. "Look, we don't have time for this. Let's get to safety first."
"Why is she here?!" Hunter groaned — which made Sorana roll her eyes.
"She works here. Apparently."
"I started today."
'Our lives just got a thousand times more difficult,' I internally groaned and followed Hunter as she began leading us to lady Dimitrescu. Lady Daniela sent me a relieved smile once she saw me, making me return the sentiment. 'Keep my temper from now on, got it.'
The castle trembled as another loud boom of thunder sounded, making the girls cower into their mother. 'I gotta do something about this,' My eyes locked with Hunter's and she nodded, clearing her throat to grab everyone's attention. As she spoke, I leaned against the wall — letting the darkness wrap around me until the warmth of the castle was replaced with the harsh coldness of endless darkness.
"Auntie," I called into the darkness. "Can you please do something about this? Tell him his little stunt killed Basil — that should make him happy for a bit."
'So it is true,' Hera's voice held sorrow. 'He is gone.'
"...Yeah — died saving me. Terrified of water, but he still jumped in to save me."
'He died a hero's death — you know where he'll go.'
"It doesn't make it any easier."
'...I'm sorry, kiddo. The storm should be stopping soon though — while he rejoices, we will be mourning. If you ever-.'
"I know... I know. I just... need a break from the gods for a bit."
'You're cutting us off?!'
"...I am... I can't put the residents of this castle in danger again. If anything gets out of hand, I'll contact someone. Until then, this is goodbye."
'Isa wait-!'
My eyes fluttered open as Hunter returned with news of the storm passing, causing me to send her a weak smile. 'Cutting off my powers is the best choice here,' I reminded myself as I pushed off of the wall. 'They, and the gods, will only be trouble while I work here.' As everyone filed out of the rooms and back to work, lady Dimitrescu called for Hunter and me to stay behind.
Once the others had left, she instructed us and her daughters to follow her — thankfully, she didn't ask Sorana to join us. I took a deep breath after we entered a room far from the other maids, just wanting this week to end. 'When am I gonna catch a break?! Just one normal week, please!?'
"How did that storm stop that fast?"
"How would we know?" I hissed after the lady stopped speaking. "...Sorry, my lady... It's just — it feels like Hunter and I have barely had a break since we reached this village."
"Then we'll discuss this another day," Lady Dimitrescu frowned, her eyes narrowing at me. "If you ever speak to me like that again, it'll be back to the cellar with you."
One Week Later
I moved my arm from over my eyes when a sudden faint presence appeared, making me sit up and glance around. When I didn't sense the presence getting closer or holding malicious intent, I relaxed and stretched my arms over my head. 'Odd,' My door opened as Hunter walked in, pulling my attention to her as she sat on my bed. I sighed and offered her a weak smile, pulling my knees to my chest.
"How has it been? A week without your powers or connection to your family... Can't be easy for you — you've had both your entire life."
"Not my entire life, remember?" I chuckled and glanced off to the side. "When I fell into Tartarus..."
"...Right, I forgot about that — everyone just said you were too sick to leave your room at the time."
"For six years?"
"Okay, so they made it seem terminal."
"...I miss them," I muttered with a frown. "My parents and siblings — and my aunts, of course. Have you heard anything from them?"
"Not a word. I guess they really are listening to you and giving us space."
"The one time we don't want them to listen," I scoffed as tears filled my eyes, the longing for home quickly setting in. "And they fucking listen."
