"Why did you take a bath with Hunter last night?"
'She just had to be awake last night, didn't she?!' I internally groaned before nervously scratching under the scar on my right cheek. "Uh... W-well it's something w-we've always d-done, honestly. Si-since we were ki-kids."
"Hm... Did she not trust me to bandage you properly?"
"Uh — te-technically, ye-yes, b-but—," I let out a frustrated groan before pausing and taking a few deep breaths, trying to not let it bother me.
"Is something wrong?"
"Pardon my language, my lady, but yeah; this stupid fucking stutter is what's wrong."
Lady Cassandra's eyes widened slightly as I balled my hands into fists.
"Everything I try fails — It just keeps coming back!"
"It's okay, you know?" Lady Cassandra muttered after a moment of silence. "We don't care about that — it doesn't affect your ability to work, does it?"
"No, but it's annoying-."
"Says who? Impatient people, that can't understand that it's involuntary?"
I fell silent after that — trying my hardest to think of a valid argument for that. 'Think, damn it! And not about how hot she is!'
"...You know, our aunt isn't the most talkative person — so she stutters sometimes — it's not anything new to us. You don't have to put on an act here... Dear Mother Miranda, I'm starting to sound like Dani."
"I... Thank you, my lady," I muttered while trying to fight back a smile. "You don't know how much that means to me."
"Yeah, well, don't get used to it!" A low buzz filled the air as lady Cassandra turned around. "You're blushing, by the way."
My eyes widened when she left, causing me to quickly duck into an empty room — locking the door behind me so I wouldn't be disturbed. 'DAMN IT! Now she probably knows I'm not human! I have to run crowd control — I have to get to lady Daniela and make myself seem human... How do I do that? How long has it been since I've had to do that?' After taking a deep breath, I unlocked the door and left the room, making my way through the halls.
"Now where is the..." I stopped after a few minutes of aimlessly walking, a frustrated sigh leaving me. "Library."
After quickly making sure I was alone, I took a deep breath, trying to focus on the bright soul of lady Daniela. 'Fuck it, no one's around, I can do this quickly.'
"Ugh, look who still has those hideous scars showing!"
"We should help her cover them up," One spat and my heart felt like it wanted to burst out of my chest — the painful squeeze in my chest serving as a reminder of just how horrible humans can be.
"I'm not—."
"Isabela—."
"That is NOT my name," I growled — ignoring how the castle shook in response; as if it were cowering in fear. "I am Isa Black, and you do not want to anger me. Hunter protected you all earlier — as did my urge to 'blend in' with you humans — but not anymore."
"So you mean to tell us that your parents actually named you Isa?"
"They did," The lady's voice rang out, making the other maids tense and go silent. "It appears we need to have another talk — and you should know what that means."
The maids silently left — heads hanging in defeat and managing to pique my curiosity. 'Right, I can just focus on the spirits and I'll get answers,' My eyes drifted to a spirit in the corner before I shifted my gaze back to the lady, my heart aching at the glimpse of the spirit that I got. 'Poor girl... Even I can't tell who you are.'
I silently followed the lady through the halls until we stopped in front of a set of doors, making me tilt my head and glance up at her. 'Why can't I be taller?' I internally sighed before the door opened. My eyes landed on lady Daniela before a smile spread across my face, another buzzing sound filling the air again. 'There it is again...'
"My lady... the buzzing-?"
"IT'S NOTHING!" Lady Daniela squeaked out — causing me to jump in shock.
"O-oh? Okay," I breathed and shook my head. "Sorry I'm late, my lady, I got a little lost, and then..."
"We had some issues with a few maids," Her mother continued for me, allowing me to stare at the floor. "You and your sisters will have prey tomorrow."
Lady Daniela's eyes brightened at her mother's words and a purr-like sound emitted from her, making me remain silent and watch in awe as she hugged her mother. 'She... They-they also purr...' My body tensed when thunder shook the castle, lightning shooting across the sky before striking a tree not too far from the tree-line. '...Okay, maybe I should've kept my cool.'
"That looks like a bad storm," I spoke up — my voice shockingly stable and calm. "Are there any rooms or areas away from windows and glass? Just in case?"
"Yes," The lady replied with a frown. "Meet me in the main lounge — go get my daughters. After that, round up the other maids — I'll take Hunter with us first and have her return to show everyone where to go."
"Understood, my lady," I bowed before walking off as fast as possible without jogging.
Once far enough away, I stopped and let the shadows engulf me — walking slowly through the darkness until it gave way to Hunter. Relief filled her eyes upon seeing me before she offered to round up ladies Bela and Cassandra since she knew where they were, to my relief. I agreed and she left immediately, allowing me to begin searching for the other maids.
Most of the maids were easy to find and bring to the meeting spot. However, a few maids began mentioning that someone was missing shortly after Hunter showed up to take everyone to the rooms. I slipped away after promising to meet up with Hunter in ten minutes — with or without the missing maid. 'Please be easy to find.'
Thunder rumbled as I rounded a corner; the figure at the end of the hall freezing me in place. 'Something's not right,' I felt my tail unravel and lash about to imitate anger. 'Come on, think! You're a general for a reason — use your... That plant.' My eyes glanced over a plant — one I managed to get brief glimpses of but couldn't look at directly. 'What's going on?'
"Hey, firebug," My heart dropped to my stomach at the giggle and the smell of vanilla. "Did you miss me?"
'Of course, she's working for Zeus directly now.'
