warning(s): death, blood, mentions of child death
The wind whistled around my body, extinguishing the flames that tried to slow my fall. Once my mind caught up with what was happening, a sharp pain tried to pull a scream out of me. Tried. The water that surrounded me quickly drowned the sound and filled my lungs.
I thrashed for a moment before breaching the surface again and sputtering most of the water out, taking in large gulps of air as I tried to find the closest way to land. A concerned voice filled the air — muffled, but it managed to help me turn and see a familiar face. Basil's ears were flat against his head as he urgently waved toward himself, bouncing in place as if contemplating what to do.
Something brushed against my leg and I nearly let out a scream at the giant fish that swam passed me. My body moved on its own — desperate to get away from the monster and out of the water. Basil yelled something before his eyes began glowing gold. In the blink of an eye, I was on the dock and he was in the water. My eyes widened as I surged forward.
'You idiot!' My jaw clenched as I entered the water again. 'That fish is too close — I just hope it doesn't—.'
"BASIL!" In the blink of an eye, he was being pulled underwater by the fish. "LET HIM GO!"
I dove after them immediately. Blood soon clouded my view, making my stomach churn as I tried to fight against the current. A rush of bubbles and blood forced me back — allowing the fish to dive deeper and my lungs to burn with a need for air. I resurfaced and gasped for air, the crisp cold of the air making breathing painful.
A hand wrapped around my arm and pulled me away from where I last saw the fish, causing me to thrash in an attempt to escape. Red. All I could see was red. If it was red due to anger or flashes of bloody water didn't matter to me — all I knew was that someone was stopping me from saving Basil.
"He's gone, my liege," Hunter muttered as she pulled me out of the water. "I can't lose you too."
I let her drag me, a soft whimper escaping me as I felt his heart beat for the last time. "...Basil..."
"My liege?" Hunter's voice brought me back to my surroundings after what felt like years of numbness. Even if it was just a few minutes. "I've found a house for us to stay in — doesn't look like anyone lives there, so we can stay until we can contact the gods."
I grunted in response and forced myself to my feet, letting out a hiss when my knees buckled and forced me to brace myself on a tree. "How far is it?"
"Not too far. I can carry—."
"No."
"As a royal guard, it's my job—."
"Hunter," I growled before sighing, wrapping my arms around one of hers and laying my head on her shoulder. "I wanna walk... That's all."
"As you wish," Hunter whispered before we began walking.
Villagers side-eyed us until we reached the house and hurried inside. Hunter locked the door as I started a fire in the fireplace, letting a sigh of relief leave me. With everything happening, it's nice to get a small break and relax.
The sound of drawers opening and shutting pulled me away from the fire, allowing me enough time to look up and catch the clothes Hunter tossed my way. I slipped into another room before stripping down entirely, slipping into the new clothes soon after. After picking up my clothes, I left the room and handed them to Hunter.
She forced me to sit in front of the fire before disappearing out back — most likely to let my clothes dry. I glanced away from the dancing flames when she returned, letting my head rest on her shoulder when she sat next to me. Her arm wrapped around my waist while her other hand rested near the button on her ankle bracelet that would summon her weapon.
"Try to get some rest, my liege," Her voice was comforting, and with the exhaustion of the day catching up to me, I found it difficult to fight her request. "I'll be on guard. It's my job, after all."
"Smartass," I scoffed as sleep embraced me.
A squealing giggle left me as I was lifted into the air, the low chuckle behind me making my giggles louder. I twisted until I could embrace my dad in a hug, smiling into his toga. He kept a hand on my back as he carried me through the halls of the castle, the words of the person following us falling on deaf ears.
"Ah, you found them!" My mom exclaimed before I was lifted again. "Did you run off to Papa's office again?"
"Mine!" I pouted and pointed at my dad, earning laughs from my parents.
"You're right, sweetheart, but you know who else is yours?"
"Me!" A voice made my head snap to the left.
"Spwout!" I giggled and ran over to him when my mother set me down. "Fwen!"
I jolted awake when Hunter shifted, my eyes scanning our surroundings before I sat up. Hunter muttered an apology before she stood and made her way to the kitchen. With a weak groan, I moved to the couch and laid back down, allowing sleep to welcome me once more.
A crow cawed as black feathers fell around me. My eyes landed on a blonde woman in a priestess robe, a dangerous aura surrounding her as she stepped toward my throne. She stopped at the base of the steps to my throne, her gold mask hiding the most distinguishing features she had. Minus her eyes. Those lifeless, ice-blue eyes burned through me, freezing me in place. Something not even my grandfather — the embodiment of evil — could do.
"Who are you?" I growled out, clenching my jaw when she wrapped a hand around my throat.
"You don't belong here."
'That voice-!' The memory of a child watching her mother's descent into madness in an attempt to bring her back flashed in my mind. "I know who you are."
The eyes widened slightly behind the mask, allowing me to see the glow of my eyes reflected in hers. "Wh-what?"
"Miranda — former biologist for the Umbrella Corp. You go by 'Mother Miranda' now."
"Stop talking."
"Your daughter—."
"Shut up!"
I smiled as her grip tightened. "She died... Age ten... It wasn't your fault."
"I said—."
"It was her fate. As this was always-."
"MY LORD!" Hunter's voice made my eyes snap open.
My lungs burned before I managed to gasp in the air, the weight on my chest being lifted as I sat up. "I think I pissed someone off."
