Nightmares

The nightmares had gone away for a while. Keith had finally thought he was beginning to get better, but of all nights to come back they had to pick this one.

      Keith woke up screaming.

"What is it? What's wrong?!" Lance asked alarmed, as Keith kicked and cried.

"Kara?! Kara!" Lance yelled. Finally Keith realized where he was and he felt his shoulders relax. He remembered what Shiro told him...just breathe.

"Sorry, just a nightmare...I get them a lot," Keith explained, trying to convince himself just as much as Lance.

"Don't be sorry. I get them too, I know they can be...beyond horrible sometimes," Lance assured, scooting closer to Keith. He quickly gave Keith a side hug, and then pulled away before it got weird. But Keith needed that desperately right now. He needed someone to hold him. To tell him everything was going to be okay. He scooted closer to Lance, and wrapped his arms around him.

"Do you mind? I just kind of need this right now," Keith said. Lance nodded nervously, and Keith could feel Lance's heart beating the fastest he had ever felt it.

"I...I don't mind," Lance stammered.

"Thanks," Keith whispered back. He was still shaking. Lance began to stoke his "hair" softly, although Keith couldn't really feel it because the wig was too thick. A rumble of frustration rippled through him and all he wanted to do was yank off the wig. He wanted to tell Lance the truth. Desperately.

       "Lance?" He asked softly.

"What is it?" Lance replied even softer.

"I...I need to tell you something, but I'm afraid to because it will change everything. Im afraid you'll hate me," Keith admitted.

"I could never hate you," Lance said.

"That's such a lie," Keith laughed. Because Lance had hated him and he could most certainly hate him again.

"The truth is...I'm not who you think I am...I'm...I'm," Keith mumbled, but he couldn't say it. All the confidence drained from him. He realized now most certainly was not the time to tell Lance. Keith was just upset right now and not thinking clearly.

"I think I get it Kara. I feel like you've gone through a lot and that's why you don't like opening up to people, so people don't know the true you am I right?" Lance asked.

"Uh yeah I guess," Keith agreed, thankful Lance had put words in his mouth.

"And maybe, because you don't open up to people you don't admit all your feelings? Like when you have connections with people? Like when you have...have feelings for people?"Continued lance. Keith nodded along not really paying attention and still not believing he had almost told Lance the truth.

      "Uh yeah...exactly," Keith agreed.

"Like with...with me?" Asked Lance. Keith couldn't remember what the previous question had been but he thought it best to agree.

"Yes, exactly," Keith said. Lance looked at him in shock.

"Wait really?! I knew it! I knew it when you said you would go to the dance with me!" Lance cheered. Keith looked at him confused.

      "Knew what?!" Keith glared.

"And then when you kissed me I knew it even more!" Lance went on, completely giddy.

"You mean our practice kiss?! What are you going on about?!" Keith demanded, sitting up again. Lance sat up in bed with him.

"Hey, if your feeling better...want to do  another practice kiss?" Lance flirted, snickering. Keith looked at him skeptically.

       "Why now?" He asked.

"Because we need the practice," Lance teased. Keith still didn't get that Lance was joking about it being practice. Somehow, because his brain was so fuzzy, he hadn't realized Lance thought Keith had just admitted feelings for the other boy.

"Okay I mean I guess. It will definitely get my mind off things," Keith sighed, knowing that he wanted to kiss Lance so badly. One more couldn't hurt. Right?

Lance tilted Kara's face toward his. Just like Lance and Keith had practiced. Keith felt his heartbeat speed. They inched closer until their lips collided again. This one seemed more real, more powerful. Lance held Kara's face to his, until finally they both pulled away for air. They stared at each other in shock, then Lance leaned back in, and they were kissing again. And Lance decided he wanted to try a little tactic Keith had taught him.

He slowly began to slide his tongue into Kara's mouth. Keith's mind was instantly triggered to the night he and Lance had made out. Was that only just the night before? It felt like decades ago! Keith got so lost in his foggy mind, that he forgot he was Kara for a second. So he let Lance slide into his mouth, and he kissed back harder. But then Lance began to curl his fingers up though Keith's long hair when Keith realized. That wasn't his hair, it was a wig! Keith quickly pushed away flustered. Okay he was wrong. The past two times he had thought he fucked up were nothing compared to this. This time he had REALLY fucked up.

"Um...just forget that ever happened. I'm going back to sleep," Keith yelled, then flopped back in the bed turning bright red. Lance laughed from behind him.

"Sorry Kara, but your lips are forever sealed in my memory," Lance flirted. Keith chuckled to himself. If that was so true then Lance would have figured out Kara was Keith already.

      "Goodnight dumbass," Keith said.

"Goodnight hot stuff," Lance whispered. Keith rolled his eyes. Lance scooted in closer to him, and Keith inwardly groaned. He wanted to be curled up in Lance's arms so badly, to protect him from the nightmares. But after what he had just done, that most certainly was not an option.

Luckily, Keith didn't have any more nightmares that night. Instead, he didn't get any sleep at all. He tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep next to Lance as Kara. He regretted what he had done. And as he played their conversation back over in his mind, the more he couldn't figure out what he had said or done to get him in his predicament. The details seemed to stray further form the truth every time it went through his mind. Whatever it was...he was sure he would find out tomorrow.
