The next morning, Keith got out of bed right when he saw the first sign of sun peaking though the window. He couldn't have thrown the blankets off him fast enough. With Lance fast asleep, Keith quickly changed and then headed out. He decided he needed some fresh air, so he bundled up and took a walk to Central Park. He decided to bring his backpack with him to change. Once he got to the park, he found a bathroom and changed out of his Kara disguise. It felt nice to have it off. He didn't want to go his whole New York trip to be him pretending to be someone he wasn't. This was his chance to just be...free. Keith stuffed the wig, high heels, makeup, and dress all into his backpack. Then he put on his classic black gloves, red crop top jacket, black jeans, and black shirt. He wiped away all the makeup, and finally he felt like Keith again.
This time when he walked through Central Park, it was a completely different experience. He sucked it all in more. The fresh air, the scenery. Okay well the air wasn't always exactly fresh. There was plenty of weed to go around. Keith had it offered to him many times by the early morning street dwellers, but with one dangerous tilt of his eyes, they left Keith alone.
Keith walked for a long time, until he felt his phone buzz. He picked it up out of his pocket and saw that it was Lance. Lance? Why was Lance calling Keith. It made Keith's heart flutter. He picked it up hesitantly.
"Hello?" Keith asked.
"Keith?! Do you have Kara's phone number?! I woke up this morning and she's gone! What if she got kidnapped or something?" Lance yelled into the phone. Keith sighed. Of course it was about Kara.
"I don't know. She doesn't have a phone, but don't worry. She goes off by herself a lot, and she knows how to handle herself. Don't worry, I'm sure she'll be back soon. Anyway, I see how it is, only got time for Kara huh?" Asked Keith, half teasing half letting his jealously get the best of him. Lance laughed, but Keith could still tell he was worried about Kara.
"Don't worry! You know you're my number one mullet! Thanks for the information about Kara! You're right, she knows how to handle herself," Lance agreed.
"Yeah," Keith sighed, mad they were talking about Kara again.
"You know...I really like her Keith. I think I'm like...in love," Lance laughed awkwardly. Keith's heart dropped. Keith was so close to having Lance love him, just not in the right way.
"Well like I told you Lance. I don't want you dating her, you'll only get your heartbroken. Besides, remember our bet? You're only aloud to date her if she asks you out!" Keith demanded.
"Oh please, grow up Keith...we made that bet ages ago. Besides she told me she has feelings for me, so as far as I'm concerned that's as good as asking me out," Lance insisted. Keith stopped breathing. So he had accidentally agreed to something terrible last night. To hell with it all! Now he was angry, and he was letting his temper get the best of him.
"That's not anywhere close to asking someone out?! And why are you so obsessed with her anyway?! It's like...you like her, you kiss me, you can't stop thinking about her, then you and me have a full on make out session, and now...and now you're full on in love! I don't get you Lance! What's your deal with us Koganes?!" Keith cried, knowing nonsense was tumbling out of his mouth. And now Lance was mad too.
"Why do you care so much Keith?! It's not like your cousin and you are close or anything! As a matter of fact...I've never even seen you two speak to each other! You don't even care that she's missing in New York City! And I thought we had already established that that whole make out thing didn't mean anything! So stop acting like I'm obsessed with all of you guys! I know my crush on Kara is really intense! But I've never really liked someone before! Maybe that's stupid but I was hoping you would maybe be the one person that could understand! I'm not sure why, I guess it was stupid to think that! After all you've kissed a million girls or something like that!" Lance cried.
"Oh shut up Lance!" Keith roared,"It's obvious to me now that you were just using me to get to Kara!"
"That's not true and you know it! You really just hurt my feelings Keith! I would never...never do something like that! Until now I considered you an even closer friend than Hunk! That's how much you mean to me!" Lance yelled.
"That doesn't make any sense! Everyone knows Hunk's your best friend! You're just saying that so I won't think you were actually using me!" Keith insisted.
"No Keith! Because...because I don't feel the same way around you as I do Hunk! I don't know how to explain it okay?! But it's like our bond goes beyond friendship or something, I don't know how to explain it," Lance sighed. Beyond friendship? What the heck did Lance mean?
"What do you mean beyond friendship?" Asked Keith hesitantly.
"I don't mean like in a gay way or anything, I know we already established that. But it's not like beyond as if I consider you my brother either. That would be...weird after what we've done together. I consider Hunk my brother from another mother. With you I'm not sure what it is...I guess I'm still trying to figure it out, and it's better to just push aside," Lance admitted, calming down.
"Okay well I guess when you push it aside, I feel like you push me aside," Keith admitted. Lance sighed.
"I think I finally understand where your coming from Keith. I'm sorry if you felt like I was using you, or shoving you aside. I wasn't trying to, you mean so much to me," Lance promised. Finally, Keith felt his heart warming again.
"Thanks Lance. I'm sorry too. I can get defensive pretty easily, and I'm sorry to bring all that up now when your in New York and worried about someone else you care about," Keith said.
"It's okay, thank you Keith," Lance said.
"Yeah have a good day. You'll have to tell me all about your trip when you get back," Keith said.
"Yeah for sure! Bye!" Lance cheered.
"Bye," Keith whispered.
As soon as he hung up the phone, Keith rushed to the nearest restroom he could find. He quickly got changed and ready, then zoomed back through Central Park and to the hotel.
Keith couldn't decipher what Lance had meant. Beyond friends? Not brothers, not friends. What else was there besides lovers? Why couldn't Lance see it? They would be so perfect together! Keith would give Lance so much love and attention that he didn't get from anyone else! Keith would always be there for him! But then Keith's mind wandered back to how Lance had said they weren't gay...as if Lance would never be gay. It hurt Keith. It hurt Keith a lot. He knew he shouldn't lash out about it to Lance. Especially since Keith had told Lance he was straight. Lance had no way of knowing. The boy was just so clueless he didn't realize when he was hurting people. But of course it's hard to know when your hurting people when the people your hurting aren't being honest with you. The whole situation was just so...so...so...so complicated. Then of course there was Kara. Keith had accidentally agreed to be Lance's fake girlfriend. He had no idea how to fix that problem without hurting Lance.
Maybe if Kara kept her distance but agreed to be in a relationship until the play was over, and then she just faded away Lance would forget without getting hurt? Keith didn't know what to do. That plan sounded a little to risky. He sighed. The hotel was in view. It was time to face the music.
