#4 Fire & Peace

Something quick and wholesome tonight xx

Remus never slept a full night soundly. There was always too much going on his life, too much running through his mind. That was until one night, after a prank gone wrong, he found himself sharing a bed with his Sirius Black.

Remus was Sirius' best friend. Sirius knew Remus didn't sleep well, Sirius often had nightmares and would find himself awake at all hours of the night and during that time he knew, even if he didn't respond, that Remus was awake as well.

Sirius was going to ask Remus if he stayed awake because of him, there had been several occasions where Sirius' cries would make Remus come over to his bed, rocking him in his arms and stroking his hair, promising him he was safe, "as long as I'm here no one can hurt you".

Sirius felt awful if it was his fault but somehow he felt Remus' lack of sleep was due to something else.

The boys stood in front of Remus' bed which was now on fire.

"Ok so that... didn't exactly go as planned" James said, trying to remember if there was a spell for putting out fires.

"You think Prongs?!" Peter was holding his breath and unlocking the windows.

Remus looked at his bed and then looked at Sirius in annoyance, Sirius looked back at him with a guilty smile.

"Sorry Mooney"

"We'll find you somewhere to sleep Moons" Peter added, still standing next to the window.

"I'm going to get Lily, she'll know what to do"

Remus went across the hall to the girl's dormitory, he knocked and could hear voices from inside whispering among themselves.

"Hey guys, it's Remus can I come in?"

Lily and Marlene opened the door and let him in, the girls were lying on their beds and on the floor just talking shit about other classmates and how Marlene's crush on Dorcas had now extended to an embarrassingly long time.

"What's up Remus?" Marlene jumped on her bed, pushing Mary off, who had decided to make herself comfortable.

"Sorry I'll be quick, Lily I just need you to put out this fire and maybe let me borrow some blankets..."

Lily stared at Remus with a disapproving face then, "JAMES POTTER I SWEAR TO GODRIC IF YOU'VE SET ANOTHER BED ON FIRE IM TAKING YOUR WAND"

Lily and Remus came back into the boy's room and Lily quickly put the fire out, most of the smoke had gone out the window so the room was a lot more breezy now and didn't smell so much.

"Keep that window open and James-"

"Yeah yeah I know" James walked over to Lily and handed her his wand, "how long until I'm allowed it back?"

"When Remus gets his bed back."

Remus turned to see Pete making a bed on the floor with blankets and pillows, he pat his friend on the back and thanked him. Lily left and the other boys got into their beds, tossing Remus any extra pillows or blankets they had.

Sirius collapsed on the floor, his knees bloody and his hands bound. The screams echoed through the large house but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't break free. Every time he tried to move he felt the pain through his body ignite, his chest bursting with pain as he looked down at his bleeding wound. His eyes were almost closed, his body was almost drained from exhaustion until he heard his name being called over and over again, "SIRIUS" Regulus shouted through the agony in his voice. Sirius' eyes widened at his brothers voice, he tried screaming back to him so many times but nothing came out, his voice was been drowned out by the torture until there was nothing but silence.

Sirius shot up from his bed, his pillow wet and his face covered in sweat. His heart was racing a hundred miles an hour and his eyes were watering, he looked around at his friends who were all asleep, he couldn't find Remus, 'no, no no no where is he!' he couldn't loose his Mooney.

Sirius rolled over when he felt a hand curled around his own and realised Remus hadn't left him, he was lying next to him in the bed. Despite half his body falling off the side, his arm was still stretched over to Sirius' hand.

"Mooney are you awake?"

"Yes Pads, I'm here"

"Thank you"

"Another nightmare?"

"Yes." Sirius didn't try to hide it, if Remus was there it probably meant he had been talking in his sleep again.

"Mooney?"

"Yes Sirius"

"Why are you awake?"

"Couldn't sleep"

"You can never sleep"

"..."

"It's not because of me is it?"

Remus looked at Sirius without soulful eyes, "no Sirius, I will always be there for you but no it's not your fault"

"Then who's fault is it?"

"My own"

"What's that-"

"Enough for tonight Pads, let's go back to sleep"

Remus went to move away but Sirius pulled him back, Remus looked at Sirius in confusion.

"Have my bed, I'll sleep at the end. I don't want you to leave me"

Remus scooted to the center of the bed and watched as Sirius transformed into his dog form, he nuzzled himself up to Remus then curled up into a ball at the end of the bed.

Remus stroked the dog's fur and watched as its grey-blue eyes started to close. Remus for once felt nothing but calm as the moonlight shone through the window, he laid his head back into the pillows, the comforting smell of Sirius' conditioner and cologne filling his senses. Before Remus could fight the feeling, he fell asleep, one hand on his chest and the other resting on Padfoot's back.

Sirius woke again in the night and realized he had transformed, making room for Remus in the prior hours they had been awake together.

Sirius transformed back to himself and watched as Remus' chest rose up and down in a rhythmical pattern, he was asleep. Sirius got up under the covers and laid next to him, watching his breath come in slow and steady, there was no sign of discomfort or distress, it was simply peace.

Sirius wasn't the reason Remus couldn't sleep, he was the reason Remus could.

Sorry I know this isn't my best work but it's late, I'm bored and wanted to get something out. The idea of Remus finally being able to sleep peacefully just by being with Sirius was such a wholesome thought to me.
