"Time to go downstairs and get your new arm La." Oliver said on Tuesday afternoon, standing in the doorway.
"Finally. Come get me unhooked from this thing and I'll get dressed."
"Alright, hold your horses." The nurse said. As soon as I was free from the monitors I jumped up, grabbed my backpack and went to the bathroom to change out of that ridiculous hospital gown. Once back in real clothes, I walked with the nurse, Oliver, and Nada downstairs to the physical therapy room. We were greeted by the physical therapist who said her name was Dr. Melanie Carson.
"Hello Dr. Carson," Oliver said, "I'm Oliver French, this is Nada Sloan and the person you are treating today is my niece Madelyn Everhart."
"Nice to meet you all. Today we're going to fit you for your new prosthetic and see what kind you are gonna have and then you'll have it about next week if all goes according to plan. Okay." Dr. Carson was way too cheery in my opinion.
"bogann an cac seo níos moille ná seilide." (This crap moves slower than a snail.) I grumbled under my breath, and I swear I heard Nada stifle a laugh.
"Pardon me?" Dr. Carson asked.
"Oh, nothing sorry, I was just talking to myself."
"Oh okay. Well then, let's get started. First, what kind of arm do you want."
"One that I can use a gun with." I said.
"We hunt a lot." Oliver supplied at the doc's raised eyebrows "we need something that has the best mobility."
"Okay, in terms of likeness to a real arm, they don't have the best mobility but if you don't care about looks then you can get pretty close to the real thing."
"beidh daoine ag cur ceisteanna má théim ar scoil ag breathnú cosúil le róbat." (people will be asking questions if I go to school looking like a robot.) I said
"She thinks that it would be cool to look like a cyborg." Nada said, following Dr. Carson. I shot daggers at her with my eyes. I swear it's like we're speaking different languages sometimes. I sat on a table for three hours getting measured and trying on different arms. When we were finally done Oliver had me discharged and we left. We had to go home to pack up all of my stuff, then to the funeral home to pick out coffins for Aiden, Nova, Jade and Luke. My parents were law enforcement so they would have military funerals. Then we had to visit social services to find me a place to live. While we were there I asked why I couldn't live with Nada or Oliver but they wouldn't answer me. The whole time I felt like I was gonna throw up and my hand was shaking so much it looked like it was an earthquake simulator. So, I rushed to take out my earbuds and phone. I turned my music up loud and took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. It worked a little bit but not really because my hand was still shaking. I put my hand under my thigh so that no one would see it shaking.
