When I woke up, we were pulling into another gas station. "We're about five minutes away." Gideon told me when I sat up.
“They won’t let us in by car, we’ll have to walk from here.” I responded, slinging my backpack on my back. I checked my pocket for the USB drive, it was still there. “Let’s go.” The boys nodded and followed me down the road. As we were walking, I couldn’t help but wonder how things were going back at the safe house. If everyone was okay, if Nada was getting any information out of the doppleganger, if Finn was okay. When we got to the building, I stopped, taking a deep breath. Taking off my backpack, I took out my Interpol badge that I always had tucked away somewhere on my person. This is it. I thought. After this, It’s over. With that thought in mind, we stepped up to the front gate. “Excuse me,” I said to the Security guard in the little security box.
“What do you need, kids?” He asked, his voice gruff.
I showed him my badge, “It’s a matter of National security. We need inside.”
The guard scrutinized my badge, and it wasn’t hard to think why. If three kids came up to you claiming to be interpol, are you gonna believe them? Of course not. “Hold on a minute.” He told me, picking up the phone that only calls the Pentagon. I was growing Impatient, we could be in there already, instead we’re all out here where we could easily be shot down. Meanwhile, the guard was on the phone, nodding and saying “uh huh” a lot. When he put the phone down, he turned to me. “You three can go in.” I smiled and thanked the man while he opened the gate.Inside, Gideon and Noah looked around in awe. I did too the first time I was here. Now it just annoyed me.
“Agent Everhart. Well, one of them, anyway.” A booming voice came from a man walking towards us.
“The only one, actually.” I told the Deputy Attorney General.
“Of course, I was so sorry to hear what had happened. My deepest condolences.”
I scoffed, “Sad? Maybe that you had lost your best agents, not that they were dead though.”
“Lyn,” Gideon had a nervous tone in his voice, “maybe a little respect for your boss?” I rolled my eyes and added “Sir.”
“Now, what is it you’re here for? I’m afraid I have a very busy day today.”
“I have the flash drive. You need to do your job and get these guys taken down. People are dying, and it needs to be ended.”
“Well, let’s see it then.”
“Oh, and you can consider this my official resignation too.” I told him, pulling out the drive.
“Hmm.” He clearly didn’t believe me.
“That means I quit. Oh and I need you to shut down the family program or I’m suing for untimely death and emotional trauma.” I handed him the drive. “Let’s go boys, let the big kids do their job for once.” Gideon smiled, Noah looked at me like I’d just signed my death warrant. I just walked back outside like I was the Queen of the world. Once we were outside the gate and it was closed, I took my badge and threw it as hard as I could over the fence, watching it fly through the air towards the building. Laughing, the three of us left to check into a hotel for the rest of the night before the drive back to the safe house.
