Suddenly, over the sound of the awful music, I heard what sounded like gunshots. Am I still hallucinating? I wondered. Then there were screams and the lights turned on and I knew this wasn't from lack of sleep. I jumped to my feet and pushed to the front of the crowd to hear what was going on. I heard yelling, someone crying, and more gunshots. Sergeant Walker held my shoulder, telling me to stay still, but I shrugged him off of me and kept going. Close enough to hear clearly now, I heard people shouting to line up against the wall. Some complied and ran to the wall. I waited until whoever it was stood within three feet of me before I went to the very edge of the group and stood behind a few other girls.

Once all the students and teachers were lined up along the wall, I saw Caleb making his way to me and dialed his number in my phone. I let out a breath when his phone was on silent and he answered. He must've known what I was trying to do because he nodded at me and stopped moving. We both put a Bluetooth earbud in our ear. They were always connected to our phones just for times like this, a force of habit apparently. I could hear his hard breathing through my earbud and I didn’t doubt that it mimicked mine. My entire body was tense, my arms and legs flexing, preparing to fight. My fists opened and closed like I was signing milk in sign language and my eyes darted around the room, getting a feel of what I was about to face.
