Chapter seventeen
The Stegosaurus
Stella's POV:
I watched the group of men walk away and I looked at Kelly and Olive. "The both of you stay here. We're gonna follow them." I said. Hunter opened the trailer door and Layla said "I can't believe they didn't know we were back here." Kelly nodded at me and said "we'll stay here. We'll make dinner or something." "Don't attract attention. You should have anything you need in our packs. I brought a lot of stuff. First aid, some snacks, a change of clothes." I rambled. "Sis, we're fine!" Kelly said while laughing. "We gotta go." Layla said as the group started to disappear in the trees. "Promise me you'll be good." I said. "We're good." Kelly replied. I followed my best friend and her girlfriend as we followed the group of men through the jungle. The five men muttered amongst each other, my father complaining about the island. He hadn't even been here five minutes. "It's tracking her this way! I know what I'm doing!" Jordan said. Dad nodded and said "let's go!" They all took off running, through a stream of water. Sarah's pack laid on the ground and my father started calling out for her. "Sarah!" "Sarah!" Nick said. "Sarah!" My father's voice getting louder. "Sarah Harding!" Nick yelled. Jordan looked at him weirdly and dad said "how many Sarah's do you think are on this island?" "Sarah!" Nick ignored him as he continued to call for her. "Sar-" My dad was cut off by the sound of large footsteps. The men seemed to huddle together as dinosaurs started to make their way in this direction. "Come on. I wanna get a better look." I said as I hopped over a log. "Stella! We don't even know what it is!" Layla said in a hushed tone. I started making my way towards the large footsteps and my eyes widened as I realized what it was. "Stegosaurus." I whispered. Hunter stood next to me as the herd of Stegosaurus made their way across the small river. I watched my older brother jumped at their loud footsteps, my father mimicking his actions. Eddie stumbled back as one crossed directly in front of them. Nick slowly brought his camera up to his face, taking pictures of the dinosaurs. "Oh yeah. Ooh, ahh, that's how it always starts. And then later there's running and screaming." Dad said.

Nick climbed up on a log to get better pictures

Nick climbed up on a log to get better pictures. Jordan pulled out his notebook and scribbled things down as he watched the dinosaurs pass by. I marveled at them, taking a few steps closer. "Don't leave me alone." Layla said as she grabbed Hunter's arm. Hunter smirked at her and Sarah's voice entered the air. "Hey, Nick!" Nick fell off the log into the water below, fear on his face. Sarah laughed and Nick shook his head as he stood up. My father looked at her with a stern look. "Ian, I never thought in a million years Hammond would get you to come here." Sarah looked at my dad in shock. She always brought the best out in him like his children did. "Hi, Eddie." "Hi, Sarah." She was greeting everyone and then her eyes landed on the three of us. "Stella!" Dad turned around and said "Stella?! What're you doing here?!" Sarah ran over and gave me a hug. Hunter smiled and Layla stepped forward. "Aunt Sarah." "Layla, how are you?!" The red headed woman in front of us was unbelievably happy to see us. Dad walked over and said "where's your sister?" "She's fine." I said. "Where is she?" "She's fine, dad. There's no need for you to worry." Sarah grabbed her camera and started walking towards the dinosaurs. "Sarah. Sarah." Dad started as he rushed after her. "Dangerous. This place is dangerous. We need to leave right now." Dad said. Sarah scoffed and stopped in her tracks. "I've worked around predators since I was 20 years old. Lions, jackals, hyenas, you." My dad looked at her in shock and Sarah went up ahead to get some pictures of one of the babies. The babies were standing close by to their mothers. I went to a different area, Layla and Hunter following me. "Don't you touch that dinosaur." Dad said. I ignored him as the three of us slowly approached one of the babies. I slowly reached my hand out, touching the small dinosaur's head. A growl of approval came from the young dinosaur. Hunter petted the dinosaur as well, a huge smile on her face. A threatened howl entered the air, my head snapping up in Sarah's direction. "They hate it when you run out of film." Dad said. Sarah immediately took off running as the Stegosaurus went after her. "Sarah!" Dad said as he went to run. Nick grabbed him and held him in place. Eddie raised his gun, aiming it at the dinosaurs. Hunter and I backed away from the baby in front of us as more commotion ensued. "Don't shoot them!" Jordan said to Eddie. Eddie shook his head and said "I wasn't!" "You're not going to shoot them?!" Dad yelled. Eddie shrugged and said "they're just protecting their baby." "So am I!" Dad desperately tried to get free of Nick's hold. The mother stegosaurus of the baby I had been petting swung it's tail towards me. I ducked and Hunter said "come on!" I followed my best friend and we made our way to where the men were. The dinosaurs left and started making their way elsewhere. Sarah climbed out of a log and dusted herself off. "Let's not do these dangerous antics again." Dad told her. Sarah rolled her eyes and said "I can take care of myself, Ian." "Can we get out of here, please? Thank you." The walk back to the trailer consisted of my father and Sarah arguing along with Nick and Jordan comparing dinosaur notes. "Where's the fire?" Eddie said as we approached the camp. "Wait, don't!" I tried to stop Nick and Chris as they put out the fire. Sarah kicked dirt into it and dad said "who started the fire?" Kelly came out of the trailer and said "I just wanted to make dinner. I wanted it ready by the time you guys got back." "Yeah." Olive added. Dad stormed over to me and said "what in god's name is she doing here?" "She wanted to spend time with her father. She wanted to be around you, dad. I know this isn't the most comfortable of situations but we'll be safe with you. We'll stay here and listen to everything you say. Just, don't take it out on her and Olive. It's my fault, dad." "You're damn right! I told you not to bring them here! I wanted you guys to stay back!" Dad yelled. "I'm sorry! We just wanted an adventure! I figured we'd be safe with you!" "Well, that's stupid! You're stupid for even thinking that, Stella!" I tried my best to stop my lip from quivering. My father and I always had petty arguments but nothing like this. And being called stupid shouldn't of hurt as much as it did. But I constantly try to show my father that I am smart and can make good decisions. No, I'm not a mathematician but I felt like I did enough for the world by wanting to be a teacher. I swallowed the sob that was in my throat. "Give me the satellite phone. I'll call someone and get us off the island right now." I could feel everyone's eyes on me. "Stella." Sarah said. I shook my head and said "the phone, Eddie." Eddie handed me the phone and dad said "Stella, I didn't mean that." "Yes, you did. I'll never be as smart as you, dad. I'll never be like you." Chris looked at me and I immediately felt like the dumbest person in the world. I walked away from the group and started to try and calm myself down. The group seemed to forget about our little blowup and started to focus on the plan. The sound of helicopters entered the air. My eyes widened as I looked up to the sky. I quickly wiped my eyes and dad said "here. You all can get out with them. Hey! Hello!" He tried to wave the helicopters down and I huffed softly, unbelievably annoyed at him. "It says Ingen on the side of that chopper! I don't get it! Why would Hammond send two teams?!" Eddie said as he lowered some binoculars from his face. Dad grabbed them and took them from him, looking through them. He shook his head and Sarah said "what does this mean?" "It means they're here for a totally different agenda." Dad said.
