=================================

- Truly surprising Lady Alcina Dimitrescu is no easy feat, but you've gone ahead and done it without even trying. All you were doing was helping Bela decide on a record from her mother's collection when you casually remarked, "My grandfather was in this band."

- Bela leans over to read the record sleeve in your hands. "That one?" The palpable disbelief in her voice when she speaks makes Alcina glance over out of curiosity. When she sees that the band in question is Miss D & the Pallboys, she nearly chokes on her wine.

- She thinks, surely, you must be joking.

- But then she truly takes a look at you. By the Black God, she can see the resemblance to the band's double bass player.

- Bela is asking Alcina if she's alright and you're eyeing her with concern. The countess only gives a simple yes before asking, "Your grandfather is Nicolae Stan?"

- You nod. "I see you have everything the band's released. Are you a big fan, my lady?"

- Alcina continues to look at you, expression unreadable.

- She's in utter disbelief. She has so many questions. Alcina lost contact after moving to Romania, is Nicolae still alive? Did he marry Melinda like he planned to? Is she your grandmother? Are the rest of the boys alive? Is he still in contact with them?

- But she puts them on hold for just a moment because, at the same time, she's incredibly amused by your words. "Do you know the name of that band's lead vocalist?"

- "Miss D? Uh... I think her name was Alsie?"

- If it were anybody else in any other situation, Alcina would be offended that you don't remember well. Your obliviousness is funny, though.

- Bela has a decent poker face, but you're getting the feeling that she knows something you don't.

- "It's Alcina," the countess tells you. "Alci is merely the nickname he used to call me."

- When it sinks in, your jaw nearly hits the floor. "You're Miss D?"

- The amusement starts seeping into Alcina's expression.

- In your defense, someone from the jazz band your grandfather was in and the fearsome Lady Dimitrescu being one and the same is... just not the type of connection that a person's brain makes out of nowhere.

- But after you picked up their first record and looked at the picture on the sleeve? Perhaps it should have occurred to you that Miss D, under her wide-brimmed hat, had a face that looked very similar to Alcina's.

- You're never going to be free from teasing comments about you not realizing, both from Alci herself and the daughters.

- Prepare yourself to be hearing lots of stories from the 30s.
