I know we're close when the sky around us dulls and the air is no longer clear.
Then white mist covers the road in front of us, the trees look darker and the ground seems farther as Venom continues to trek forward and Syrian squeezes me from the front tighter as he sits facing me.
Me and Kamau decided to switch the kids because they were getting whiny and they refused to go in the carriage.
The same cold breeze runs by me, carrying the same sandalwood smell.
What isn't the same is the grass.
It's greener, less grey, more alive.
Thanks to Kamau's bird, Cord, the land my Queendom lays on is now healthy.
The trees are now stiffer, less droopy and I see sprouts beginning to grow.
I don't know how to describe it, it feels better, warmer.
My thoughts drift away when the large obsidian gate comes into view.
My eyes widen when I notice the dead vines that once covered it is now gone.
And for the first time in a long time, the gate is shiny.
I don't worry too much about this gate because it's the back entrance too my castle, a straight route without having to go through the city.
Gasps are heard behind me as they seem to notice the gate too.
I must say, it does look quite ominous.
"We're here."
"This is scary."
"I don't like this."
"Close your eyes."
I hear multiple whispers that go in one ear and out the other, all but one particular tiny voice.
"I'm scared." Syrian whispers holding me tight.
"What are you scared of?" I glance down it him.
"It's dark." He says with his eyes shut against my stomach.
"Why are you scared of the dark." I ask.
"Because there are monsters in the dark." He shivers, squeezing even tighter.
I smile. "Yes there are monsters in the dark, but it doesn't mean their bad or scary. Never judge how they look ether-" I feel something hit my right leg and I look up to see Kamau with a frozen look on his face.
I let go of the reins and squeeze his bicep, making him flinch and he whips his head towards me.
"Why are you acting like that?"
"Like what?" He clears his throat while holding a quiet Seri a little tighter.
I scoff and shake my head, not in a mocking way, I just think it's cute that he's scared too.
I say the same thing I said to Syrian to Kamau.
He looks offended. "I'm not afraid."
"Okay." I say indifferent, he doesn't have to admit it if he doesn't want to.
Once I come close enough to the gate it automatically opens, the sudden bang invoked a couple of gasps and even a small startled scream.
"How?" I hear Levos whisper surprised.
"Magic." I say the obvious answer.
I took the back way and this is the back gate to my castle.
I don't want to scare everyone and overwhelm them tonight because even I know my citizens might freak them out considering they haven't met a group this size in, well forever.
