"Emilia!" my nan shouted from across the caravan, walking over towards me, holding a phone out at arms distance. It was almost a week into the holiday and in a couple of days, Luke's band mates would be turning up.
"Yeah?"
"It's for you!" she handed me her phone before walking off into the kitchen area where she began to dish up the pancakes she'd previously been making.
"Hello?" I asked, eyebrows furrowed as I began guessing who could have possibly felt the need to phone my nan to speak to me.
"Hey..." an angelic yet familiar voice responded.
"Luke?" I questioned, my voice slightly higher than usual. "What are you doing phoning my nan? Wait- how did you even get her number?" I chuckled, biting down on my bottom lip.
"Well uh, my nan lent me her phone so I could phone your nan and ask to speak to you," he said as a weak laugh could be heard on the other end of the line.
"Why didn't you just phone me?" I giggled to myself at his long-winded approach to contact me.
"I-I don't have your number. I did, but you must've changed numbers. Did you change your phone or something?"
Well that explained a lot.
He'd never text me 'happy birthday' or texted at all for that matter. I just assumed he'd forgotten about me throughout the year; I could be so stupid.
"...Em?"
"Uh yeah, I got a new phone for Christmas. Sorry about that..."
"It's okay," he laughed.
"So, um, what did you want?" I asked sweetly, still curious as to what the blonde haired boy wanted.
"Well, everyone here is going into Berrisdown for the day... But, I was wondering if you were going to be at the beach...?"
"Yeah, by the looks of it." I smiled. "Just waiting for Oliver to hurry up and get his lazy ass out of bed."
He laughed at my reply. "Well, do you think I could, um, maybe meet you down there?"
Even though he couldn't see it, a huge beam erupted from my lips. Smiling like an idiot, I was glad he couldn't see the tinge of my cheeks.
"Sure," I said as casually as possible. "Meet me there at... Half ten?"
"Okay, cool, see you in a bit." I could hear his smile, and relief, through his words as I said goodbye and the line soon went dead.
"What did he want?" my nan questioned, walking back into the dining area with two plates stacked high with delicious looking pancakes that made my stomach churn in hunger- a reminder that I had yet to eat something.
"Oh, he just wondered if we were going to be at the beach today."
"I thought Sally and the boys were all out of town for the day?" she replied, puzzled.
"Yeah, they are.. but Luke's not." I flashed her a quick smile, to which she just nodded, and began to make my way to my own caravan to change out of my pyjamas and get something to eat.
"Em, if you're going back, take some of these!" she called, handing me a smaller plate of the scrumptious and sweet smelling pancakes. "I could hear your tummy rumbling from a mile away," she joked. I sent her a quick thank you before going back next door.
______________
After having eaten the whole plate of pancakes- with the help of my brother who was enticed by the sweet scent to get out of bed- I'd showered and began to search for something cute to wear for the day. My grandparents had already left to go down to the beach and my parents were now just waiting on me to get ready so we could leave. By now, the innards of my wardrobe were spewed all over the floor and I still stood cluelessly in my pyjamas. I looked at my phone to see it was 10:20 AM.
Shit.
I'd promised Luke I'd meet him in ten minutes time and it took twenty five plus minutes to walk to the beach. It wasn't like I could even text him to say I would be late, meaning he would be left down there on his own- or at least until my grandparents turned up.
Instantly, I grabbed the first shirt I saw that just so happened to be my All Time Low tour shirt that, by now, had been worn to death. I tucked it into a pair of high waisted denim shorts and untied my hair, messily detangling it with my fingers and flipping it over to one side; I didn't have time to worry about it. Grabbing my beach necessities, I shoved them in my duffle bag and joined my parents who were waiting outside my cousins' caravan. They were saying goodbye to my cousins who were going off surfing at some beach with my uncle for the day.
Eventually reaching our beach, my eyes searched around but I couldn't see ay sign of Luke and instantly my heart fell. Maybe he'd gone back to the apartment? Or maybe he was running late? I dropped my bags off in the beach hut and jumped down onto the warm, cream sand to join my grandparents.
As I was speaking to my nan and grandad, I saw, behind them, the back of a familiar boy down by the water's edge as a smile built on my lips. His back was to me and was clad in yet another black top which revealed the sides of his pale torso. Staring at his broad shoulders, yet tall and slender figure, I noticed how his muscles flexed each time he threw a stone into the ebbing sea. He turned around to unveil the words 'YOU COMPLETE MEss' printed in bold white font across his chest. His eyes clocked with mine before his face lit up and he began to walk over. As he did, I clearly mouthed the words 'sorry' as I had left him for almost half an hour alone with my grandparents. I wasn't worried so much about my grandad, but more my nan; she could be very forthcoming and opinionated. I just hoped she hadn't said anything embarrassing to Luke.
Once he'd made his way over, he engulfed me in a tight hug which seemed to last a second or two longer than the usual 'hello' hug. After, he greeted my parents and Oliver, he made his way into the beach hut; I followed him in there.
"I'm sorry, Luke," I said, shutting the door behind us.
"It's fine, don't worry about it!" he laughed, revealing a dimple on each cheek as his sparkling eyes seemed to posses a smile of their own.
"So..." I said looking around me and breaking the slightly too intense for comfort eye contact that was going on between the two of us. "What did you wanna do today?" I asked, finally looking back up at him.
"I thought maybe we could go for a walk?" he exhaled, taking his piercing between his teeth.
I didn't know how we ended up like this, but at this point we were very close. Any closer and he would've felt my hearts heavy beats against his chest. Why was my heart doing this? I felt as though my chest was deprived of oxygen and my heart would give up at any second. I could only hope that my face didn't seem as flustered as I did on the inside.
"Sound good?" he hummed and I could feel his minty breath fan on my face. Beginning to feel claustrophobic and incredibly self-conscious, I nodded when suddenly the bright light from outside stung my face. The beach hut door swung open and my nan stood at the entrance with three empty mugs of tea in hand.
