"I remember when the three of you were... about six," said Dave, Luke's uncle. "And I was trying to teach you guys how to body board...""-Was that the time Luke cried because the seaweed wrapped around his leg?!" Laughed George.
"Yep!"
"I REMEMBER THAT!" I giggled, covering my mouth with my hand to contain my laughter. "He thought it was a shark." Everyone at the dinner table laughed at Luke's embarrassment.
"No I didn't.." He sighed, face tinged red.
"'HELP ME, HELP ME! SHARK, SHARK!!!' " Mocked George.
"I was six." He deadpanned. "Besides, you can hardly talk Em! You hate seaweed!"
"Oh, I know," I grinned, "I don't mistake it for a shark though..."
"Whatever," He mumbled, trying to fight back a smile.
"So, who's up for dessert then?" Asked Luke's aunt, standing up and collecting some plates.
"Meeeeeeee!" said Ellie, a spoon already in her hand.
"You can have some as soon as we've cleared the dinner plates, okay?" said Liz to the little blonde girl as she stood up and gathered more of the crockery.
"Here, I'll help," I said, standing also and accumulating a pile of dirty dishes.
"Oh no, don't worry love- you sit down, I can manage" said Liz.
"No, it's fine" I smiled, before walking out into the kitchen with the plates and placing them on the counter.
"Thank you sweetie," she smiled warmly.
"It's fine" I laughed.
"Can I just say, It's ever so nice to have you around," I blushed slightly. "I couldn't wish for a better girl for Luke than you... I mean, you've always been the daughter I never had."
"That means a lot to me, thank you," I smiled genuinely.
"Did you know he called me the night he took you out..?"
"Pardon?" I questioned, a smile still plastered on my face.
"As soon as he dropped you off from you're little date, he called me and told me everything... He sounded so happy and excited to tell me," she explained. "I must admit, I was desperately trying to contain my squeals- it was late at night," she giggled.
"He never told me that.." I blushed lightly at the thought of him being so excited and immediately wanting to tell his mother that we were a thing.
"I guess he would be too embarrassed to," she laughed, before pausing. "He really does love you Emilia... And not just now that you're dating, but for many years. I've always seen it in the way he looks at you..." she smiled warmly, "And in the way you look at him..."
I couldn't contain the reddening glow that was forming on my cheeks, nor could I form a coherent sentence as all these sweet compliments left her mouth. So I did the only thing I could do in that moment, and that was hug her.
"Em- o-oh... you guys alright?" said Luke as he walked in the kitchen, a quizzical look apparent on his features. I pulled away from Liz's homely embrace and turned to face the blonde boy.
"We're good," I smiled sweetly, my eyes flickering back behind me to Liz who had a shallow smirk on her lips.
"Okay..?" He nodded slowly, uncertainty evident in his tone of voice. "Um, anyways, do you need a hand with dessert?" He offered.
