"Here you are, he's happy and healthy. Take good care of him."
"We will, thank you."
Katsuki and I thank the woman in the white lab coat, as we leave the full waiting area. The two of us silently walk to our car, admiring the newest member of the family. We arrive at Eijiro's house after a short 10-minute drive. We enter the red house and are immediately surrounded by two young children and one very happy shark.
The moment I sit down Aiko and Hiro beg to see the kitten in my arms. I chuckle and bend a little to give them a better view of the golden bundle of fluff in my arms. He's doing much better than when I found him but he's still a tad skittish. He stares at my children in curiosity and looks between me and my family as though to ask "Who are these small humans?"
I coax the little kitten closer to my children.
"Be gentle," I tell them, "you don't want to startle him."
Aiko quiets down immediately, Hiro was already pretty quiet. They coo and awe at the kitten as he slowly leans into their gentle touch.
"He's a cute little thing," Eijiro says, holding his hand out for the kitten to smell, "do you guys have a name for him yet?" I shake my head.
"Not yet," I explain, "we want to name him together. What do you guys think we should name him?"
Aiko and Hiro become silent, both contemplating every name their little minds can think of. Katsuki, Eijiro, and I chuckle in amusement at the faces they make when they think of names they hate.
Finally, after a couple of arguments between the twins, they give up.
"Alright, why don't we make a list of names we like, and see which one we like best?" I suggest. The twins nod and rush to get a piece of paper and a pen. Katsuki follows behind them just to be sure they don't get hurt or damage anything.
For a moment, the living room is quiet. But then, Eijiro speaks up.
"Hey... Y/n," he says quietly. I look up at the man. By the tone and level of his voice, I can already guess what he'll say next.
"I know... later when the twins are asleep, we can talk then."
"Right."
The children return with their father and we get to work thinking of names.
And the winner...
Lion.
"Well, now that our little buddy has a name, why don't you two go watch Tv with our new friend," I suggest, trying to give Lion to Hiro to hold. The moment I let go, Lion jumps out of Hiro's arms and returns to my lap. I watch Lion curl up to fall asleep before looking at Hiro.
My little boy looks so disappointed.
"Don't worry, squirt." Katsuki interrupts, "It's not your fault. Lion just needs to get used to everyone. He was stuck with your mom for a while so he's already used to her."
"Oh... OK..." Hiro says, still pretty disappointed. I give him an encouraging smile and open my arms for him. Hiro notices and climbs onto the couch next to me to hug me. We snuggle together for a bit. Katuski takes Aiko out of the room, probably to occupy her with video games for a bit. Kirishima decides he wants Pizza and leaves to go get some. He offers to buy some for the rest of us but I refuse.
Katsuki hares when we get fast food. He insists that as long as he can cook, we'll never buy fast food.
Hiro and I stay silent for a moment after the others leave. For that moment, everything feels at peace. But then Hiro asks me a question in the most broken voice I've ever heard.
"Momma... Why don't I have a quirk..."
My muscles tense stiffly. How am I supposed to answer such a question?
"..."
My job as a mother is to care for and support my child. I don't intend to slack on that.
"Hiro, I don't know why you don't have a quirk yet," I explain softly, "You could develop your quirk anytime this year, you might develop your quirk later, but you might not develop a quirk at all. I don't know for sure, but I do know this: no matter what, whether you get a quirk or not, I'll always love you the same.
You'll always be my son.
You'll always be your father's boy.
You'll always be Aiko's brother.
You will always be Hiro."
Hiro, the sensitive little boy he is, begins crying. I pull my beloved boy closer, nearly squishing Lion between us if he didn't jump out of the way. Instead of running, the golden kitten rubs his head on Hiro's hand as if to comfort the child.
Hiro lets out little sniffs and sobs as he finishes crying. He moves off my lap and returns to sitting on the couch. He sits cross-legged beside me and, to our surprise, Lion joins him. I can hear Hiro's suppressed excitement.
He looks at me with a twinkle in his eyes as if to say "Look, Mom!" I chuckle and pat both their heads. I grab Hiro's favourite book and pass it to him. While he enjoys himself, I decide to get to work preparing dinner.
After a few minutes, Katsuki joins me. I let him take over, assisting him by chopping vegetables. I've always been skilled with a knife, much to Katsuki's relief.
I finish cutting the assorted vegetables and give them to Katsuki to begin frying. I grab oyster sauce from the fridge and add it to the soup as Katsuki adds the cooked vegetables.
A few more easy steps and our Yaki Udon is ready to enjoy.
Time for dinner.
