"It's all rubbish................"
"What's all rubbish................?" Ada asked, as she came into the room to find Michael and Polly.
"Michael met old Annie...................." Polly explained, as she took a piece of loose tobacco from her tongue. Ignoring her son as he rolled his eyes.
"Ooooooooo, what did she say..............?" Ada enquired enthusiastically, as she took a seat on the sofa next to her aunt.
"As I was saying............it's all rubbish..............."
"I don't know...........Annie's predictions have always been quite good if you ask me.................."
"I tried to tell him that, Ada, but he won't listen.............." Polly interjected, as she and Ada continued to look at the man that was stood by the fireplace. Michael just sighing and shaking his head at the two women.
It had all started when Michael had gone with his cousins to a gypsy encampment on the outskirts of Small Heath. The chief accountant of the Shelby firm, not sure why he had been brought along, but deciding to stay with the car, as Tommy, Arthur and John had gone to sort out, whatever they were there to do. Michael's eyes looking over the group of painted caravans and the horses that happily munched on the grass next to the river. The young man jumping as he felt a hand being placed on his shoulder; turning to see an old woman, whose head was covered in a rather elaborate scarf, but whose clothes had definitely seen better days, standing in front of him. Her eyes, which appeared to be covered by a milky haze, staring deep into his. The old woman pulling him close, and whispering into his ear, before she left as quickly as she had appeared. The long stick in her hand, helping guide her way.
He had to admit that he had been a little taken aback by what she had said. Michael would say that he had never had any problems in attracting the girls in the past, yet there had really always been something missing, the women rarely little more than dalliances. Entertainment for a night, or perhaps a little longer, until another pretty smile caught his attention. But if the old woman was to be believed, that sort of thing might soon change.
"Well..........are you going to tell us or not..............?" Ada asked, as she waited for her cousin to speak. Waited to hear what the old woman had had to say.
"Fine................." Michael began with another heavy sigh.
"But I still say that its all rubbish................She told me to take care of the girl. To not leave her without her coins; and when I realise that she was the one for me, I had to ask her to marry me, before she sailed away without me................" Michael finally explained. His head shaking again, as he saw the smiles that came to the faces of the two women.
"And..............who is this girl that you're supposed to take care of...........?" Polly queried, as she stubbed out her cigarette; interested to hear about whom had caught her son's eye this time. To hear about a girl that might mean that she would eventually become a grandmother.
"There is no girl...........well, not at the minute anyway. Like I said, its all rubbish...................."
"Well, that must mean that you are going to meet someone..........I love it when Annie gives that kind of predictions. It always ends up being so romantic............" Ada interrupted, as her smile got bigger and dreamier. Michael not able to understand how two intelligent women like his mother and cousin could take the ramblings of a blind old woman so seriously, but it was obvious that they did.
"Look........I have something to do at the office. I'll see you both later............." Michael added, kissing Polly and Ada on the cheek, before making his way out into the street. Dodging the children that ran past him down the long, dark street.
In truth, he didn't have anything to do; but he needed air and time to think. Time to wonder if the old woman's words might actually mean something real. He had always prided himself on being intelligent. On being diligent and serious, so should he really give this old Annie's "prediction" any credence. Should he even give it another moments thought.................
"Oh, I'm sorry................." A voice came, as Michael was hit by something, or should that be someone. His eyes looking down to see a woman collecting the things from the floor that had fallen from her bag.
"I should have been watching where I was going. I really am sorry.........." The woman continued, as Michael crouched down to help her retrieve the items that were strewn over the cobblestones.
"That's alright I..........................The accountant began, his words disappearing as the lady looked up at him and smiled. Michael feeling his heart beat at a vigorous pace, as he looked into her eyes.
It was true to say that he had seen many a pretty woman. Many a beauty that had caught his eye and would end up spending the night, or a few nights with him; yet what he would feel when he met these women, was different to what he found himself feeling now. The way that his stomach was twisting, his mind racing as he offered her the hairbrush that he gripped in his hand. Like nothing he had experienced.
"I, er...............Michael................" Michael managed to say, as the young woman took the brush from his hand. His mouth drying and palms sweating, as her finger brushed over the back of his hand.
"Oh, um..............(Y/n)...................and again I'm so sorry for bumping into you Michael, I'm running late and................." (Y/n) explained, as she pushed the brush back into her bag along with the other things that she had collected. Jumping to her feet, as she noticed the time on her watch.
"I'm sorry, I really have to go.............It was nice to meet you though, Michael......." She added, as she closed her bag and quickly made her way down the street. Michael watching her as she went. A soft sigh leaving his lips, as she disappeared. His eyes falling to the floor and catching a glimpse of something. Michael bending over and picking up a small purse that obviously had a few coins in it. The accountant feeling his heart begin to thump violently, as he recalled the prediction; Michael determining to find the girl and return her coins, as he headed back to find his mother and cousin.
