Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit, Weybridge, Surrey. It wasn't where the boys had expected to find themselves at the beginning of the week, but here they were. John and Arthur closely looking over the Hudson Super Six racing car, while Tommy stood back, admiring the machine from afar as the mechanic seemed to nearly have a fit every time that his older and younger brother tried to touch it. The three waiting for a certain gentleman from Camden Town to make an appearance. Alfie obviously after making one of his grand entrances.
All this had been Alfie's idea; but as they both already dealt with racetracks for horses, Tommy didn't feel that racetracks for cars, was too much of a leap. And as there seemed to be as much money involved in this kind of racing, as there was the other; this time, Alfie's idea might prove lucrative. The only issue being, that it would appear that they had the car; but the driver, that was a different matter. Though John had tried to volunteer for the job, more than once.
"Thomas, Arfur, John............" A familiar, loud voice exclaimed from behind them. Arthur and John just rolling their eyes and continuing to try and become better acquainted with the Hudson, while Tommy dropped the butt of his latest cigarette. Quickly extinguishing it with his foot, when he remembered how close certain flammable liquids were.
"Alfie............."
"Well, what d'ya think............" The Jewish gangster enquired, as he came to stand by Tommy. Looking at the car with a proud gaze.
"Its very nice, Alfie. But not much use without a driver................."
"Oh, ye of little faith, Thomas. Trust in Alfred Solomons, and he will deliver. The driver for this collaboration between Shelby and Solomons, should be arriving any time soon..............." Alfie replied, putting on his glassed before he pulled his pocket watch from his waistcoat pocket. Looking at the time, then turning his attention to the sky. Tommy's shaking his head slightly, at the Londoners usual strange antics; before also turning his eyes to the wide blue, above him. His brows furrowing, as he saw something appear in the distance. The dark spot becoming bigger and bigger, as it got closer.
"I will warn ya though, our driver is a little............unconventional, shall we say..............." The Londoner continued, peering over the top of his half-moon spectacles, as he turned his attention to Tommy. The man from Birmingham still looking at the dark spot that was now obviously a plane.
"Unconventional...........what does that mean..............?" John asked, as he finally stopped giving the older mechanic a heart attack by looking under the bonnet, messing with things that he really shouldn't be messing with, and walked over to join his older brother. He too watching, as the sound of the quickly approaching plane, filled the air.
"It means, he's up ta somethin..............." Arthur interjected, as he looked over at Alfie. The big Londoner placing his hand over his heart; giving the oldest Shelby a look of mock, hurt.
"Arfur............ya cut me ta tha quick. Would I do anythin ta ruin this unique relationship? No. What I mean when I say that our driver is unconventional, is that they are..........not what ya might expect. But I've seen em drive; and if they can fly that damn thing, then a car is nothin............." Alfie explained. He and the Shelby boys ducking, as the now recognisable Nieuport Nighthawk, flew only feet over their heads before climbing back into the sky and coming back around. Arthur muttering something about the driver being as mad as the Jewish gangster, and probably about as trustworthy, as the biplane came to a soft landing on the field nearby. Alfie taking off his glasses, allowing them to hang from the chain around his neck; before pulling his black overcoat back over his shoulders, smiling at the Shelby boys and then making his way over to where the pilot was slowly climbing from the aircraft.
"(Y/n)................!" Alfie called out, finding his arm caught and his steps faltering, as he was pulled to a stop.
"(Y/n)........? Our driver is bloody woman?" Arthur asked in disbelief. As Alfie peeled the oldest Shelby's fingers from his arm.
"I did say that tha driver was unconventional................."
"Unconventional.........? It's a bloody woman..............."
"That she is, and if ya let me go, you'll found out just what a woman she is. Her father was an ace during tha war. Taught her everything he knew, before he passed away last year. She knows more about engines than even most men I've met. (Y/n) was born ta race; petrol's in her blood..................."
"We'll see..............." Tommy interjected, as he came up behind Arthur, placing a hand on his brother's shoulder. Arthur giving him an unconvinced look; but nodding in agreement. Alfie brushing his hand over his beard; his smug smile not doing anything to calm Arthur's simmering anger.
"Mister Solomons.........." A voice called out. The four men looking over, to see their possible driver, removing the flying goggles and cap. John taking the toothpick from between his teeth, Arthur the cap from his head; and Tommy taking another cigarette from his case, as a cascade of lush hair fell over an elegant set of shoulders. A beautiful crimson smile lighting up an exquisite face and a pair of sparkling eyes, that held just the right amount of mischief behind them.
"Mister Solomons, so nice to see you again............" (Y/n) continued, as she came to stand before him; pulling a leather glove from her hand and offering it to the Londoner.
"(Y/n).........she new............?" Alfie replied, as he gave her a smile and looked over at the plane behind her.
"Not new, new, no; but its the first time I've taken her up. Been working on the carburettor, it has a terrible tendency of getting gunked up. Think I've fixed the issue, so thought I would see how she went. Rev up the engine a little, and all that.........and talking about revving up a lady's engine............." (Y/n) explained, before turning her attention to the three men that were quietly watching the interaction. Two of them standing there with their mouth agog.........the third, the look in his eyes sending the most exquisite thrill down her spine.
"What say you introduce me to those handsome creatures..............."
