Finn looked across the pub, to the stunning young woman that sat with his sister, his aunt and Esme. He had known (Y/n) all his life. They had run through the streets of Small Heath when his brothers had been at war. They had gone for adventures beyond the town; pinching food from the kitchen so they did not have to return home until it had grown dark, much to his aunt's chagrin. They had been each other's shadows since they had been tiny; Polly often teasing her nephew by telling him that she was sure that one day, he and (Y/n) would be married. But fate.......well, fate had had other ideas.
She had been in the car with Finn that day when the Lee's had paid a visit to the house, when Erasmus had left his message of the wire cutters. Finn pretending to be Tommy, and (Y/n) pretending to be Polly as they sat there, and Finn moved the steering wheel. The two just looking at one another as Tommy appeared and had asked how they got in the car; the youngest Shelby announcing proudly that they had climbed in. Finn ignoring his brother as he told them to get out of the car, the way that they had got in, choosing instead to open the door; Tommy quickly grabbing for (Y/n) at the same time as he had reached for the grenade, shielding both her and Finn, as it had exploded. (Y/n) gripping tightly to Tommy, as he had told his younger brother never to pretend to be him; the young girl sobbing into the older man's arms, as she refused to let Tommy go. And that was when things had changed, that was when his world had begun to fall apart; the girl that had once always been by his side, slowly, ever so slowly, drifting away from him, as if she blamed him for her nearly dying that day. The girl that Polly had once joked would be his wife, now far beyond his reach. The love that he still had for her, never destined to be returned. Finn swallowing down his drink, as he watched Tommy make his way over to the group of women and place a kiss to (Y/n)'s cheek.
He had refused to believe it when he had first been told by John; refused to believe that Tommy would take the only girl that he had ever loved, from him. But Tommy had; he had taken her and now there was talk of marriage. (Y/n) destined to become a Shelby, but not in the way that Finn wanted. His grip on his glass getting tighter, as he watched his older brother whisper something into (Y/n)'s ear; whatever Tommy had said, causing her to blush a little, before she nodded. His older sibling holding out his hand for her to take, before he led her off to a more private area of the pub.
In a way, Finn couldn't blame Tommy for wanting her, for claiming her, before anyone else had. (Y/n) was beautiful, strikingly, captivatingly so. The youngest Shelby sure that she must be the most beautiful girl in the world. But what he could blame Tommy for, was seeming to help make the gap that had begun to form between he and (Y/n) on that fateful day, ever wider. Wide enough to the point that it was now Tommy she loved, and not him. Finn promising himself that he would never forgive Tommy for that; that he would always hate Tommy for that.
"Finn........." Isaiah said, as the Shelby got to his feet. Isaiah not blind to the fact that Finn had just watched (Y/n) and Tommy make their way into the backroom. Not blind to the fact that Finn still had feelings for the girl that they had both grown up with.
"Just sit down, yeah........Ya don't want ta do anything stupid. Ya know if ya stick ya nose in Tommy's business.........." Isaiah tried to reason. The son of the street preacher, holding up his hands in surrender, as Finn turned and glared down at him. His glass being forcibly smashed on the floor, before Finn pushed the table out of his path, and made his way over to the door to the private room.
He had decided that he could not, would not let this happen. He would storm into the room and tell (Y/n) that he loved her; that it was he that she should marry, not Tommy. That his brother would never care for her like he did; and that he would spend the rest of his life making up for whatever had driven the wedge between them in the first place. That he would drag her away from his older sibling and kiss her like he had wanted to kiss her for years; before taking her to somewhere where they could make love. Yet as he got to the door, his alcohol fuelled bravery seemed to leave him. The youngest Shelby boy hesitating as he lay his hand on the doorknob; gulping at the large lump that had formed in his throat, before he slowly, quietly, opened the door. His heart breaking into a million tiny pieces, as he saw the scene in front of him; (Y/n) laid on the table, with Tommy between her legs. His older brother kissing her neck, her breasts, as the pair moaned and (Y/n) begged Tommy to not stop.
He had of course known that if Tommy wanted to marry (Y/n), there must have been something between the two; that his brother and (Y/n) were probably much more intimate than just the kisses that they shared when they were in front of the rest of the family. Yet to see it right in front of his eyes; to see Tommy where he should be. To hear (Y/n) moan out his brother's name, instead of his.........Finn wishing that he had listened to Isaiah. That his already broken heart, had not become shattered because of his foolhardiness. The young Shelby closing the door as quietly as he had opened it; before making his way out of the pub. Ignoring the calls of his family as he walked out into the night. Finn knowing now that no matter what he did or said, his unrequited love for (Y/n) would stay just that........unrequited.
