There are ten more days until the wedding. Meghan's insanely busy with preparations and school, so I haven't gotten to talk to her. Without my best friend to be with, I've just been going to school and to work and back home, where I burrow myself in my bed and avoid talking to anyone.
Meghan and I haven't talked due to our argument we had well over a week ago. Holy shit, it's only been a little over a week. It's felt like a lifetime since I last spoke to my best friend. I see her in school; in the hallways, in class, etc. She's constantly with Chris and her other friends and I'm not going to say it doesn't hurt, because goddamn, does it hurt. I feel an ache in my chest and I always struggle to suppress my jealously whenever I see her and Chris together. They're always holding hands and hugging and laughing and it hurts me to know that I'm not the one making her happy.
I miss her so much.
My thoughts are interrupted by my phone ringing. I groan and look at the screen, seeing Luke's name in bold letters. I debate whether or not to answer his call because I've been avoiding pretty much everyone since Meghan and I's argument. I give in eventually and answer the call.
"Oh, look, he's alive," Luke says sarcastically.
"Hello to you, too," I roll my eyes, wondering why the hell I answered his call in the first place.
"Quick question: your house has a brown-shingled roof, right? Not grey?"
"Um, yeah, the grey roof is my neighbor's house. Why?" I furrow my eyebrows in confusion.
"Incoming in 3, 2, 1," Luke says dramatically before hanging up.
"What the f-" I stop talking once I hear a loud knock on the front door downstairs. I hear my mom open the door and I can't quite make out what she says or to whom she's talking to, but my questions are answered when my bedroom door opens.
"Hello!" Emily and Luke shout in unison, holding their arms out.
"Go away," I frown and slump back under my covers.
"Um, no, not gonna happen," Emily says as Luke steps forward and pulls the covers off of me.
"Dude, when did you last shower?" Luke asks me.
"I don't know," I mumble, just wanting to be left alone, "Why are y'all here?"
"You've been sulking for over a week, Ash," Emily steps forward, "It's time to get yourself cleaned up and okay again."
"Em-"
"Ashton Irwin, I know you're upset, but Luke and I miss you and it's not healthy to close yourself off."
"I don't wanna go out," I groan, "I want to stay home and be left alone."
"We know that, Ash," Luke says calmly, "But life's still moving on and it's gonna leave you behind if you don't do something about it."
"That's poetic and all, Hemmings, but I don't wanna do shit."
"Ashton, I hate to say this, I really do," Emily shakes her head, "But you don't have a choice. You've ignored us and Meghan since you two's argument and now, Luke and I over here have had to resort to using tough love tactics."
"Tough love," I scoff, rolling my eyes.
"C'mon, we're not playing," Luke insists as he sits on my stomach.
"Ow, what the fuck, Luke, get off of me! Your bony ass is sitting right on my ribs!" I groan loudly, trying to push the annoying blonde off of me.
"Not until you agree to come with us," Luke laughs.
"Luke-"
"Ashton," He says sternly.
"Fine," I say loudly, "Fine, I'll go, just get off, for fuck's sake!"
"That's the spirit," Luke says with a smile as he boops my nose.
"Fuck off, asshole," I roll my eyes and sit up from my bed.
"We'll wait in here while you shower," Emily nods as I walk out of my bedroom.
Fucking twats.
•••••
"How is this helping?" I ask drily.
"You're getting fresh air," Emily rolls her eyes, "Now please stop complaining."
I huff and take a sip of my cookies and cream milkshake. So far, Emily and Luke's 'tough love approach' sucks. We're just sitting around drinking milkshakes at the ice cream shop in the airport. It's not cheering me up at all. I can't stop thinking about Meghan and I just want to go home.
"Has Meghan talked to you guys?" I ask quietly.
"What?" Luke chokes a tad on his chocolate milkshake.
"You know, has Meghan talked to you? Is she just ignoring me?" I keep my eyes on the table. I can't decide whether or not if I want to hear the answer. Part of me doesn't; I can't handle yet another rejection from her. However, another part of me is interested to know if she's mad at me or if she just needs space from everyone.
"Uh, no, she hasn't talked to us," Emily says quietly. I know she's upset by all of this, too. After all, her and Meghan have been best friends way longer than I've been best friends with Meghan.
"Oh," is all I can say.
"Ash, have you told Meghan how you feel about her?" Luke asks.
"Yeah, I kind of yelled that I want her in front of a crowded coffee shop," I chuckle bitterly at the memory.
"What'd she do?" He asks curiously.
"She looked at me with a sad look on her face and she just walked out of the shop. She didn't say anything."
"I'm sorry," Luke frowns.
"It's fine, I mean, it's her choice to react how she does."
We sip on our milkshakes for a moment before I speak up, "The wedding's coming up soon, isn't it?"
"Yeah, it's in a little over a week," Luke nods.
"Are you two going?"
"Yeah," Emily says quietly, as if she's unsure of how I'll react, "I've been invited since Noelle got engaged. I've known her since I was in middle school."
"Honestly, I just think I got invited so I could be someone that hangs out with Emily while Meghan got ready."
"Probably," I force a laugh, "I hope you two have fun."
"It won't be the same without you," Luke frowns.
"You'll have a blast, regardless if I'm there or not," I roll my eyes and chuckle.
"Is Meghan going with anyone?" I ask, before I have the chance to stop myself.
"Um, yeah, she invited Chris," Emily nods slowly.
"Oh," I nod grimly and try to ignore the growing pit in my stomach.
"Ash-"
"It's fine," I say, standing up, "I'm fine, trust me." I'm most definitely not fine. "Thank you for this, honestly, it was nice to get out for once. I'll, uh, see you later," I stammer before walking off, leaving Emily and Luke sitting at their table and calling after me.
