december 23, the day christmas came early.
"Why did we have to do this so late?" Emily groans, laying on her back on Luke's apartment floor with her arms and legs outstretched.
"It's six thirty," Luke chuckles, sitting down cross-legged on the floor next to her.
"My previous question still stands," Emily turns her head to look at him.
I roll my eyes from my seat on the couch. We are in the middle of moving Emily into Luke's apartment.
A couple days ago, Luke came up to me and asked me how I felt about him asking Emily to move in with him. Of course I was okay with it, Emily and I had been living in our own apartment on the coast for over a year now. So, Luke then took Emily out for a date night and asked her to move in with him. She happily said yes, as I imagined she would.
Now Emily is laying on the floor, not wanting to unpack any boxes. She didn't have many boxes to begin with, but the process is taking longer than we thought. We just finished moving her stuff into the living area of Luke's apartment.
"Babe, c'mon, we're almost done," Luke pokes Emily's cheek.
"Elf is on TV," Emily says abruptly.
"It is?" Luke perks up, "Wait, no, stop distracting me. We need to get these boxes unpacked, otherwise they'll just sit here."
"Wouldn't you rather watch Christmas movies with me than unpack boxes?"
"Of course I would, but the boxes aren't going to unpack themselves," Luke rolls his eyes and chuckles.
"We can unpack tomorrow," Emily offers with a persuasive smile.
"It won't hurt you to unpack them tomorrow, Luke," I laugh, "Just hang out tonight and get back to work tomorrow."
"You're taking her side on this?" Luke laughs as he turns and faces me.
"We should listen to Meghan," Emily nods with a serious expression.
"This is why we need Ash here with us, he needs to take my side on things," Luke throws his hands up in defeat as he stands up and mumbles something about going to make brownies.
"Trust me, nobody wants Ash home more than I do," I shrug.
"When's he coming home again?" Emily asks.
"In a week and a half," I sigh, "I can't wait that long though, it's already been three months."
Ashton's supposed to come home from his most recent tour. His band hasn't made it huge yet, but it's definitely on its way. His bandmates, Calum and Michael, are apparently really good friends with Luke and they've been trying to recruit him to be in the band. From what Ash has told me, Luke is seriously considering joining, he just isn't sure what to do about his last year and a half of college.
Ashton's been gone for three months and when he comes home, the band is scheduled for an extended break before they start writing again. I'm thrilled, I get to have Ashton home for longer than usual.
Emily, Luke, and I are still in college. Emily's still studying behavioral neuroscience (and saving as much as she can to travel when she graduates), Luke is deciding between finishing college and joining Ash's band, and I'm still studying musical theatre and music theory in New York. It's a dream come true for all of us.
I miss Ashton. I miss him so much. We've always been there for each other and it's been three years since we first met that day in the airport.
It seems like forever ago that he accidentally spilt coffee on my jacket and couldn't stop swearing. Then he got a job at the sweets shop across from the café and our friendship fell into place quickly after that. I can't even begin to think how different my life would be without Ashton and I owe it all to that small airport that all four of us best friends couldn't stop being in.
