Noah's pov
"Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a dee-ay
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay! ""The fuck are you singing about?" Jace growls at me as I enter his kitchen, skipping and singing my heart out. Had he of locked the patio door, I would have been left out on the deck with the bag of cat food as my only audience.
"I believe the song was self explanatory. It's a wonderful day." I smirk at him.
Jace rolls his eyes at me, then continues making himself a sandwich. "Is this the part where I'm supposed to ask why it's a wonderful day? Or should I ask what could have possibly changed since I saw you earlier trying to escape?" He looks over at the clock on the stove, "Four hours ago, to be exact."
Slowly pulling my phone out of my pocket, I pretend to be looking at something on it. When in reality, it was recording him. "I'm glad you asked. I got a job." I gleefully announce.
His hand pauses the spreading of mayo on his bread, and he casts his eyes upwards at me. A genuine smile crosses his face. "That's great, Noah." When he resumes his task with the butter knife, I notice the corner of his lip twitch.
"Are you not gonna ask me what my new job is?"
The grin spreads across his entire mouth, "Is it coming over here to bother me?" I can tell by the way his eyes scrutinize me. He knows exactly what was going on.
"You got part of it right. But the word you're looking for isn't bother. It does, however, start with a B." My smile grows bigger and bigger as the grin Jace was sporting completely leaves his face.
"Badger?" He questions through narrowed eyes.
"Hmm, badgersit. Nope, that doesn't sound right." As his expression becomes almost hostile, I wag my eyebrows at him.
He slaps the two sides of his sandwich together with more force than necessary. "Which one of those assholes put you up to this?"
"Well, I suppose Micah. He's the one who offered me the job." I shove my phone back in my pocket after getting the expression everyone was going to die laughing about. "Shit, you know what? I forgot to ask how much he was paying me. You used to do the whole babysitting gig. What's the going rate nowadays?"
He stuffs a large bite into his mouth, then answers me while still chewing, which is as gross as it sounds. "Depends on the age of the pups."
"My best guess is he's in his terrible two's."
Jace takes his sandwich in one hand, a glass of water in the other, and then exits the kitchen. He heads to the staircase without looking back at me. His prickly behavior only entices me to continue 'badgering' him.
"Are you going for a nap?" I holler out.
"Nah, I'm going to go paint my bedroom walls with shit and wait to see how your new employer reacts to that. My best guess," He mimicks my earlier tone, "Is that this will be your first and last day on the job."
"Alright, well, when you're done with arts and crafts, come on back down, and we can build lego together." I head to the other side of the kitchen and help myself to a slice of banana bread that was just sitting there, waiting for someone to come along and consume it. I will happily volunteer as a tribute.
