Jace's pov
She's not really a werewolf. She can't be.
The stupidness of this thought swirls around in my head. Of course she wasn't really a werewolf. She was a Demi-God who was given a wolf when she was born to the Winter's family. While this exact process was done with the rest of us, for Azariah, it was different. She was placed into Amora, not conceived by her and Matias.
Still, how the hell could she not decipher the variety of sounds going on around us. The ground shook with the fury of not only our enemy chasing behind us. But also from the aid that was here to help us. Our pack members had divided into two groups, and were currently running along the sides of us, hoping to box in these fuckers. All Azariah and I had to do was give them the chance to close in when the time was right.
Of course, Matias had relayed this plan of his to me, I just didn't know that my mate hadn't received the memo.
Good thing she's cute.
"Well, what direction should I be looking in then Mr. Knowitall?"
"They're beside us darling." I deliberately slow my pace so I'm following Ari now, instead of running alongside her. If any of them get close enough to attack, it sure as fuck wasn't going to be her that they try and take down.
"I was reading a magazine at the store the last time we went into the city, and there's this term humans use for someone who hovers over them too much. I believe it's called a helicopter parent."
"What's your point?"
"That's you Jace. You're helicoptering me." She dodges to the side a few times, but it'll take more than some fancy footwork to shake me off her trail.
"Seriously?" Micha's voice thunders through our mind link. "You two imbeciles are moments away from being torn to shreds, and you're talking about helicopters?"
Azariah attempts to defend herself, only to be cut off. "RUN for fuck sakes," He screams at us.
"What do you think we're doing? Having a nice afternoon stroll?" I holler right back at him.
The wolves chasing us were now close enough that I swear I can feel their breath on the back of my neck. "Keep running" I tell Ari, then swivel myself around and prepare to fight the onslaught of wolves. With my claws fully extended, and fangs ready, I launch myself at the one who almost caught up to us. His speed was impressive, it's a shame he has to die.
We both leap in the air at the same time. His teeth were on full display as he tries to get a hold of my neck mid-air. With my body aligned with his, I sink my claws into his upper body and wrap my legs around his rear legs. His jaw snaps closed directly beside my ear, letting me know how close I came to losing it. Once our bodies hit the ground, I retract my claws and quickly grab his neck, giving it a good twist.
Time was not something I had much of, so I jump up and prepare to take out the next one. "Son of a bitch!" Azariah snarls a second before she jumps clean over my head and puts herself between me and the mob.
"Matias! Were out of time. A little help here." I call out to him. A dozen or so wouldn't be much of a challenge. But considering we were staring down a good forty or more, the odds did not look great.
After that first fast runner, the next to reach us was a group of six. I had no option but to trust that Ari could handle herself. And, for the second time in the last ten seconds, a large black wolf comes flying over top of my head.
Kihe!
"I can't leave you two alone for one Goddess damn minute, can I?" He snarls at us as he rips into the first wolf he reaches. Kihe certainly wasn't fucking around, within seconds three of the six laid dead at his feet.
