Jace’s pov

Underestimated! That right there is the word of the day.

We’ve known all along that Malcomb wasn’t fucking around, and the bullet he just put in Fenris’s skull says as much.

“Did he just say to go get Finn?” Micah asks me. Just like myself, he’s in shock over what we witnessed.

“He did. We need to act fast. Our backup will be in place in a few minutes.” I say in a rush. Time was not on our side at the moment, but Micah knows that as well as I do.

“He’ll kill you on sight Jace, let me go down and try to stall him.”

From our vantage point up here on the roof, I could just put a bullet in Malcomb’s skull, the same way he shot Fenris. The only problem is that we don’t have enough ammo to defend ourselves against the rest of them. Then again, maybe the rest won’t put up a fight if their fuck face leader is put out of his misery.

“You’re not going anywhere pal. How many rounds do you have in your gun?” I flip the barrel of mine open and frown at the two lousy bullets I find there.

“Same as the last time you asked me.” He sarcastically replies. I suppose I deserved that, it was only five minutes ago we both counted what we had. I was hoping one of us missed some, or some divine intervention happened, and our barrels would be full.

I watch as Kane starts to walk away from Malcomb, likely going to collect Finn. Fuck it, I wasn’t going to let this happen, no matter how few of bullets we had. And I needed to send a message right this minute. “I gotta stop him,” I tell Micah.

He nods at me, knowing exactly what I mean. Which is good, because I was doing this with or without his approval. “We go out swinging.” He confirms.

I stand up and turn my body sideways, keeping myself flush with the large electrical box on this roof. At least that's what I think it is. The humming sound coming from it indicated as much. I line up the back of Kane’s head in my gun's sight, take a deep breath, then pull the trigger. I know I should have taken Malcomb out, but Kane was the one on his way to collect Finn, so stopping him seemed like the more urgent matter.

The shot surprises everyone on the ground, as they all throw their arms up like it was gonna protect them. It’s not until Kane falls face first into the ground that they realize what exactly had happened.

The loud piercing scream that accompanies him falling to the ground sounded like it came from a female. If it wasn’t for the fact that Torrin threw his body on top of Kane, I wouldn’t have known any better. “You son of a bitch!” He screams between sobs. He attempts to shake Kane awake, and when that fails he tries to wipe the blood off the back of his head to see how bad the injury was. It’s hard to believe this stupid son of a bitch was Malcomb’s right hand.

Speaking of Malcomb, he  looks up to where we were standing, and glares daggers at us. “My my, aren’t you two in a pickle now?” He laughs at us.

“You're surrounded asshole, it’s over.” I tell him with false confidence.  His followers look around while Malcomb just continues to stare at us. “Put down your weapons, and we’ll let you live.”

Malcomb just laughs then lifts his gun and starts shooting. The others follow suit, causing Micah and I to take cover. “Think this thing will blow up,” He knocks on the electrical unit that we’re hiding behind.

“Possibly.”

“Kane was heading towards that small building on the other side of the cabins. You think that’s where they’re keeping them?” He asks me.
