Lena POV
It was finally a sunny day and I have no plans. Normally I would call my friends and we would go hang out playing Skipper in the old theatre.

Today was different. I sat in my driveway and watched as people walked by. The society and economy isn't what it used to be. Used to everyone smiled and greeted each other and shook one another's hand. Now, well nobody can be trusted. You avoid eye contact and keep some type of weapon on you at all times. My dad prefers a taser gun to a gun gun. He says it keeps people away but also keeps you out of prison.

A guy walked passed me and kept his head down. I didn't know him so he must have been new to the neighborhood. So I said hi to him. He smiled back and kept walking. Weird. That was the first time anyone smiled back, or even acknowledged that I was visible. It was a start.

I got up and started walking in my friend Tilar's direction. She only lived two blocks down from my house.

Tilar was a close friend of mine, along with Danielle, Tonya, and Mikell. We've been friends since kindergarten. She was my mat buddy and we took naps together. Fun times we had when we were younger. We don't get that now.

The year is 2031, she and I have been through everything together. You name it and we've probably either done it, seen it, or been through it. We've been through World War 3, an Ebola and Avian flu outbreak, and us being placed in a concentration camp. I would say that's quite a lot for a couple of teenagers to have gone through, but like I said; society isn't like it used to be. It's bad.

I walked up to Tilar's door and knocked really hard. She quickly opened the door, shocked to see me.

" Oh. Lena, I'm surprised to see you here. What's up?" she asked me coming outside.

Most people don't go into other's houses. 1. Because people can't be trusted and 2. it's rude.

"Nothing I just wanted to come visit my best friend." I said smiling wide.

She sat on her step and I sat next to her. " So how's the family?" I asked cautiously.

" Fine. It hasn't been the same since I got back here. You know?" She was talking about the concentration camp we were thrown in. Seems as if everyone treated us differently because of what had happened to us.

"Yeah," I looked across the street at a little boy. " I know what you mean. My dad has treated me...not so much kind, as like I'm wounded or vulnerable." I told her.

" Why do you think they released us?" She asked me looking off in the distance.

" To be honest, I don't even know. I mean they stuck us in there because we're freaks, why give up on us so quick? Face it Tilar we're lost causes. Nobodies." I could feel my face flush and my hands began to shake. I didn't understand why they think we're so dangerous. Our abilities are to help us survive, not to kill for fun. Though some Specials did do that, but they should be punished. Not everyone as a whole.

"You think?"

" I don't know, Tilar. For all I know this world is just trying to get back at us." I told her angrily.

" Look," She put her hand on my shoulder. "Half the world knows we exist. We can't just sit around feeling sorry for ourselves. Lena, you know that better than anyone." She wrapped her arms around me in a hug.

" Come on, let's go see Mikell. I'm sure he misses us plenty." I said sarcastically and dusted my pants off as I stood up.

" Yeah, I have been meaning to pay a visit to him anyways." She told me walking to the end of the drive way.

" Can I ask you something, Tilar?" I asked catching up with her.

"Of course you can." She replied smiling.

" If anything were to happen to me, or any of us, what would you do?" I asked her.

" I would probably beat the living crap out of whoever hurt you guys. You know if I didn't get caught with you." She laughed and so did I.

" Now can I ask you a question?" As she asked that a drone flew over our head and landed on someone's porch.

" Go ahead." I put my hands in my back pockets and looked at my feet.

" Do you think they'll stick us back in those camps?" She asks me shielding the sun out of her eyes.

" I don't think so. They released us. Why would they want us back?"

" I don't know, maybe because we're a dying breed and they could make clones out of us." She said kicking a pebble in front of her.

" Possibly. I can't say for sure, though because I don't even know why they released us to begin with." Just as I said that we came up to Mikell's door and Tilar knocked on it.

Mikell answered with a smile and we smiled back. I missed my friends, we had been seperated at the camp . Who knows what happened to any of them. I didn't want to ask either.

" Hi guys. What are you doing here?" He asks us coming out and sits in one of his oval porch chairs.

" We can't come see our other best friend?" I pulled him in for a hug and wrapped my arms around him. " We've only seen each other twice since camp."

" You guys don't understand how awful it was for me in there."

" I can only imagine. I didn't want to ask you guys, but I have too." I sat down in his other chair and faced them. "What did they do to you two?" I asked with sympathetic eyes.

Tilar looked pained and Mikell twiddled with his thumbs.

" I mean you don't have to tell me. I - I was just asking."

" No. No, I'm glad you did. My parents have been avoiding the question and I need to talk about it. I've been starting to feel alone and I feel like I'm gonna go crazy." Mikell told me chewing on his bottom lip. I sat up straight and prepared myself for what he was going to say, but as he cleared his throat we heard screaming and we all stood up to see what was happening.

A blue steam powered mustang car drove by and stopped in front of the house. Five guys waved guns in the air and yelled at us. Before we could say or do anything they fired their weapons and drove away quickly.

I tried to stop the bullets before they hit anything or anyone, but I missed two. One hit the house and the other hit...Mikell.
